The iTunes Store application in the just-released iOS 17.2 simply redirects users to the Apple TV app for accessing previously purchased films and TV series.
The iTunes app for iPhone and iPad is now exclusively for music. For video, go directly to the Apple TV app.
iTunes Store app phases out TV shows and movies
iTunes goes way back to 2001, and was initially a music store, with much of the focus being on songs for iPod. But starting in 2005, Apple added buying video to the app, including both movies and TV series.
The iPhone-maker is now walking that back. The Apple TV app is the new way to purchase and access this video content on an iPhone and iPad.
With Monday’s release of iOS 17.2, the iTunes Store app still includes tabs for Movies and TV Shows, but these now simply redirect users to the Store tab in the Apple TV app.
An app facelift, too
The new iOS version also ushered in an updated version of the Apple TV application.
The redesign introduces a Home tab, which Apple calls “a unified guide for all the shows, movies, and sports users love.” There’s also a tab dedicated to the Apple TV+ streaming service.
In addition, the aforementioned Store tab is the place for buying films and TV series, while the Library tab displays previously purchased content.
Change effects Apple TV devices, too
Something similar happened with Monday’s tvOS 17.2 update, too. Those with an Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD will find that the iTunes Movies and iTunes TV Shows apps redirect users to the Apple TV app.
The new version of this app for settop boxes now has a new sidebar that’s intended to allow allows users to quickly navigate through the app. It has tabs for search, Apple TV+, MLS Season Pass, Store and Library.
There are also shortcuts to channels and apps viewers already have, such as Disney+, Paramount+, and Max.
