Brie Larson as a frustrated scientist with a love of cooking is a recipe for a hit series on Apple TV+. After premiering earlier this month, Lessons in Chemistry is already the second most popular series or film on streaming, according to a market analysis.

New episodes debut every week on Apple’s streaming service.

Lessons in Chemistry is off to a strong start

Star power can make a TV series. People tune in to watch The Morning Show for Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon. They watched See because it starred Jason Momoa. Of course, to be successful, a series or film needs more than big names. But a celebrity’s name on the movie poster can certainly get a show off on the right foot. That surely helps explain the early popularity of Brie Larson’s new series on Apple TV+.

The show is at No. 2 on ReelGood’s list of Top 10 Movies & TV dusting the week of October 12 through October 18. And the drama is at No. 8 on JustWatch‘s list of top streaming shows for the week ending October 15 — not bad considering the series launched October 13.

Here’s how Apple TV+ describes the show:

Set in the early 1950s, Lessons in Chemistry follows Elizabeth Zott (Larson), whose dream of being a scientist is put on hold in a patriarchal society. When Elizabeth finds herself fired from her lab, she accepts a job as a host on a TV cooking show, and sets out to teach a nation of overlooked housewives — and the men who are suddenly listening — a lot more than recipes.

Who else is in the kitchen with Brie?

In addition to Larson, the series stars Lewis Pullman (Top Gun: Maverick, Outer Range), NAACP Image Award winner Aja Naomi King (How to Get Away with Murder, The Birth of a Nation), Stephanie Koenig (The Flight Attendant, The Offer), Kevin Sussman (The Big Bang Theory, The Dropout), Beau Bridges (The Fabulous Baker Boys, Elsewhere), Patrick Walker (Gaslit, The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey) and Thomas Mann (Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl).

Aggregate Films produced the series for Apple Studios. Six-time Emmy Award nominee Lee Eisenberg (WeCrashed, Little America) serves as showrunner.
