Rather than a dull, dry recitation of the antitheft features built into MacBooks, Apple created a video featuring another madcap adventure from the Underdogs.

The video is fun an and exciting, but is also a demonstration of the multiple ways Macs prevent criminals from profiting from stolen Macs.

MacBook antitheft features to the rescue

MacBooks are valuable, so thieves try to steal them — sometimes right off the tables in Apple stores. What the criminals clearly don’t realize is how many antitheft capabilities are built into macOS notebooks.

It’s possible the users of the computers also don’t know all the ways MacBooks prevent theft, or at least make themselves nearly useless to anyone but the owner.

To get the word out, Apple could create a webpage that lists the security capabilities of its laptops. But instead it made a video: The Underdogs: Swiped Mac.

When her MacBook is stolen right before a critical presentation, the team leader of the Underdogs uses Find My to track the device. Meanwhile, the hapless thieves discover that it’s password protected so no one is interested… potential buyers can tell it’s stolen. And a password-protected Mac has its data automatically encrypted.

By the time the criminals find someone who doesn’t care that the MacBook is hot, the Underdogs have turned on Remote Lock so nothing can be done with the device without a passcode.

The Apple video has a happy ending as the Underdogs get their MacBook back before a Remote Wipe is necessary.

Really, “The Underdogs: Swiped Mac”is a fun way to learn about MacBook antitheft measures. The video isn’t at all like a lecture in Data Security 101. It’s more of a spoof of a heist movie, with plenty of action as the bumbling criminals and our semi-clueless heroes race around trying to sell or recover the MacBook.

Return of the Underdogs

The Underdogs starred in several previous videos that also demonstrate Apple tech being used in real world situations. As the characters all have a wide range of personality quirks, the videos mix humor in with the education.

Their last video, The whole working-from-home thing, showed Apple devices being used during the pandemic.

Before that, the Underdogs created a circular pizza box under challenging conditions. With, of course, the help of Apple tech.
