Apple TV+ dropped a “first look” at a new drama/horror series and “parenthood fable” The Changeling, coming to the streaming service September 8. See the photographs below.

The eight-episode show stars LaKeith Stanfield (Atlanta, Sorry to Bother You) and comes from the critically acclaimed and bestselling book of the same name by Victor LaValle.

The Changeling debuts on Apple TV+ September 8

The Changeling debuts on Apple TV+ with the first three episodes on Friday, September 8, with another episode coming weekly through October 13.

Here’s how the streaming service described the show, describing it as a “horror story,” “fairytale for grownups,” “parenthood fable” and “perilous odyssey”:

Based on the acclaimed bestselling book of the same name by Victor LaValle, “The Changeling” is a fairytale for grown-ups. A horror story, a parenthood fable and a perilous odyssey through a New York City you didn’t know existed. In addition to Stanfield, the series stars Clark Backo, Adina Porter, Samuel T. Herring, Alexis Louder, Jared Abrahamson and special guest star Malcolm Barrett.

It’s worth noting the book, published in 2017, received a lot of praise. It won an American Book Award, a Locus Award for Best Horror Novel, a British Fantasy Award for Best Horror Novel and a World Fantasy Award for Best Novel.

“The combination of Grimm-ish allusion and social commentary might seem pat in the hands of less capable authors, but [Victor] LaValle executes the trick with style … LaValle has written a story full of things to terrify not children but the parents who lose sleep worrying about how best to protect them,” Time wrote, also naming it one of the magazine’s Top 10 Novels of the Year.

We’ll have to wait and see what’s so scary about the show and whether it lives up to its source material when it comes out, or perhaps through a trailer or two beforehand.

Showrunner and executive producer Kelly Marcel (Cruella, Venom) adapted the show to the screen. Melina Matsoukas (Queen & Slim, Insecure) directed the pilot episode.

Apple Studios and Annapurna produced the series. Annapurna’s Megan Ellison, Patrick Chu and Ali Krug executive produce. Showrunner Marcel, the book’s author LaValle, David Knoller and director Jonathan van Tulleken executive produce alongside star Stanfield. Director Matsoukas serves as executive producer through her De La Revolución Films. Sue Naegle and David Wolkis executive produce, with Khaliah Neal as co-executive producer.

And hey, there’s still time to read the book before the series airs.
