OpenAI introduced ChatGPT for iOS, an application that brings the much-hyped chatbot powered by artificial intelligence to iPhone users.

It is free and has all the features of the web version, which means it is ready to answer questions with generally correct answers. Plus, this iOS version supports OpenAI’s speech recognition system.

Accept no substitutes: Official ChatGPT app released for iPhone

In recent months, OpenAI’s ChatGPT took intelligent AI out of the realm of sci-fi and into reality. It’s not like talking to C-3PO, but it can code apps and communicate realistically enough to make some AI researchers nervous.

And, starting Thursday, it’s available for iPhone. ChatGPT for iOS lets users submit questions and get answers on a wide variety of topics based on information the AI pulled from the web.

“Seek guidance on cooking, travel plans, or crafting thoughtful messages,” suggests OpenAI. “Generate gift ideas, outline presentations, or write the perfect poem.”

For business users, the system is good for “idea feedback, note summarization, and technical topic assistance,” said the developer.

It can synchronize the user’s history across devices, so discussions that start on the iPhone can easily move to a Mac.

ChatGPT for iOS is available now in the App Store, but currently is only for residents of the United States. (Update: On May 24, OpenAI expanded the rollout of its app. “The ChatGPT app for iOS is now available to users in 11 more countries — Albania, Croatia, France, Germany, Ireland, Jamaica, Korea, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Nigeria, and the UK,” the company said on Twitter. “More to come soon!”)

The software is designed for iPhone, and so runs on iPad in a phone-sized window. Mac (and probably iPad) should use the web version of the service.

The free version includes access to GPT-3. Paying $19.99 per month for a ChatGPT Plus subscription adds support for the newer GPT-4, which OpenAI says, “can solve difficult problems with greater accuracy, thanks to its broader general knowledge and problem solving abilities.”
