Apple TV+ dropped a trailer Wednesday for The Crowded Room. The new 10-episode psychological thriller centers on a shooting in New York City in 1979. It stars Tom Holland as a suspect and Amanda Seyfried as an interrogator. She gets in his head and seems to find a lot going on there.

The trailer doesn’t come right out and say — spoiler alert! — Holland’s character suffers from dissociative identity disorder — multiple personalities — but you can’t help but consider the possibility. The show premieres June 9 on the streaming service.

Trailer for psychological thriller The Crowded Room gets in suspected killer’s complicated head

The Crowded Room trailer unveils what looks like a gripping period piece with chilling psychological overtones. Apple TV+ doesn’t reveal too much in its press materials. It describes the action this way:

The Crowded Room follows Danny Sullivan (Holland), a man who is arrested following his involvement in a shooting in New York City in 1979. A captivating thriller told through a series of interviews with curious interrogator Rya Goodwin (Seyfried), Danny’s life story unfolds, revealing elements of the mysterious past that shaped him, and the twists and turns that will lead him to a life-altering revelation.

In the trailer you see a disarming Goodwin interviewing a confused and seemingly gentle Sullivan. The cat and mouse game intercuts with scenes of conflict where he appears to be the victim. But it becomes less clear to the characters — and the audience — if that’s actually the case as the trailer unfolds. As the interviews probe into his past, he starts to seem less gentle, too.

“I have these blank spots,” a drawn Sullivan mutters when Goodwin asks if he knows why he’s being questioned.

Academy Award winner Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind) created the series. It’s “inspired by” the 1981 “non-fiction novel” The Minds of Billy Milligan by Daniel Keyes. The book tells the story — spoiler alert! — of the first person in U.S. history acquitted of a major crime after pleading not guilty because of dissociative identity disorder.

Ensemble cast

In addition to Holland and Seyfried, the series stars Emmy RossumWill Chase, Sasha LaneChristopher AbbottEmma Laird, Jason Isaacs and Lior Raz, among others.

Apple Studios and New Regency co-produced the series. Goldsman serves as executive producer through Weed Road Productions. Other executive producers include Holland, Suzanne Heathcote, Alexandra Milchan for EMJAG Productions and New Regency’s Arnon Milchan, Yariv Milchan and Michael Schaefer.

Kornél Mundruczó directed several episodes and also executive produces.
