Withings unveiled its newest smart scale Tuesday, the Body Smart. It provides precise weight, body composition and health measurements as well as an Eyes Closed Mode “for those that dare not look,” the company said.

Eyes Closed Mode instead shows encouraging statements on the scale and surfaces your actual stats in the Apple Health-connected app so others can’t see them.

Withings Body Smart scale

The new Body Smart scale features multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), precision weight sensors and advanced algorithms delivering health analysis.

“Body Smart is a fantastic addition to the Withings smart scale lineup and one of the most feature-rich scales at its price point on the market,” said Mathieu Letombe, CEO of Withings.

“Designed to improve users’ lives, Body Smart elevates the market by providing highly precise and accurate readings along with insightful and actionable health data and advice,” he continued. “It brings a new level of precision and clarity to the complexities of health in a beautifully designed device that fits in any home.”

The scale’s health measurements include heart rate, visceral fat, metabolic age and, for the first time, basal metabolic rate (BMR), the company said.

Withings described how BIA works:

BIA works by sending a small electrical signal through the body, which measures the resistance and reactance of body tissues to the current. The more frequencies used, the more complete and accurate the picture of body health can be created.

Multifrequency BIA and advanced algorithms enable Withings to dig deeper into body composition expanding from measuring fat, muscle mass, and water weight percentage to analyzing visceral fat and other advanced body metrics.

New BMR readings

In addition to measuring visceral fat around organs that is linked to various chronic diseases, the new scale measures BMR. That’s the number of calories you burn at rest, which can be an important indicator of metabolic health.

The BRM feature will appear with a May 2023 update, the company said.

Color screen with Eyes Closed Mode

The new scale features a color screen that displays all the relevant information. But for those who prefer discretion, it also includes the new Eyes Closed Mode among several other modes.

Here’s Withings’ description:

In Eyes Closed Mode, the user’s weight is tracked in the accompanying Withings app but does not appear on the screen. Instead, users see encouraging motivating messages or daily information such as step counts, air quality, and the weather. Compatible with up to eight users, other modes include athletic, pregnancy and baby to accurately weigh even the smallest family member.

There are apps for that

Body Smart connects to the Withings app to help users track measurements and progress over time and get health advice. It connects with Apple Watch and Apple Health through the Withings Health Mate app. This and other Withings products also connect with Google Fit and other health and fitness apps, the company said.

Like its sibling Body Comp and Body Scan scales, Body Smart is also compatible with the Withings+ (formally Health+) subscription health-improvement service. It guides users daily through additional analysis and insights to build better habits to reach health goals.

The new Withings Body Scale costs $99.95.
