Apple TV+ struck a first-look deal with Maya Rudolph’s production company after last week’s premiere of her comedy series Loot.
That means Rudolph’s company, Animal Pictures, will show what it’s working on to Apple first, before shopping it around to other buyers.
Apple’s first-look deal with Animal Pictures
Rudolph heads up Animal Pictures along with Natasha Lyonne and Danielle Renfrew Behrens. Aside from Loot, Animal Pictures put out Netflix’s noteworthy Russian Doll, which stars Lyonne.
In the new first-look deal, Apple gains right of first refusal for all Animal Pictures TV series and digital feature films in production. If Apple doesn’t want to invest in a project, then Animal Pictures can shop it to other potential buyers.
Apple builds quite the first-look roster
Previously, Apple TV+ signed similar deals with other production companies — including some big names — as it continues to roll out new content.
These include Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way, Idris Elba’s Green Door Pictures, Martin Scorsese’s Sikelia Productions, Ridley Scott’s Scott Free Productions, Ron Howard’s Imagine Entertainment and Natalie Portman’s MountainA.
Loot debuted last Friday with its first three episodes. The rest of the first season debuts weekly through August 12.
The comedy centers around Rudolph’s character, Molly. Recently divorced from her tech billionaire husband, Molly must figure out what to do with her new wealth and celebrity status. When she finds out she heads a charitable foundation, she turns her focus on that and its oddball cast of characters.
