OtterBox this week launched a replacement program for its unique OtterSpot batteries after confirming that some are susceptible to swelling.

Earlier versions of the battery, which are designed to stack so that multiple units can be charged simultaneously, will be swapped at no cost for those who contact OtterBox support.

Early OtterSpot batteries can be swapped

OtterSpot debuted in August 2019 with a stackable design unlike anything else we’d seen from rechargeable battery packs before it. The standard bundle includes one 36W charging base and one battery, but a second can be added.

Building a small tower by stacking the batteries onto the base allows them to charge simultaneously. A smartphone and other Qi-compatible gadgets, such as AirPods, can also be topped up by adding them to the top of the stack.

Despite the heat that’s generated during wireless charging, the OtterSpot seems perfectly safe and reliable. OtterBox this week confirmed that initial batches of its batteries have the potential to swell.

Beware OtterSpot swelling

“We identified a component defect in some of the early OtterSpot batteries, which has since been addressed,” reads a notice on the OtterBox website. “While no injuries have been reported, we are replacing early units.”

Affected batteries carry serial numbers starting with 229, 250, and 259. If you own one, OtterBox recommends that you discontinue using it right away and contact customer support on 1-855-688-7269 for a free replacement.

OtterBox told The Verge that it has emailed affected customers to notify them of the defect. But you don’t need an email to be eligible for a free replacement if you have one of the units mentioned above.
