Known for its flexible tripods and mobile lighting, Joby is now covering the content creator market for audio recording like a blanket. It rolled out five new microphones in its Wavo lineup to take on rivals like Rode, Shure and Sennheiser at several different price points.

The new mics mean more options for vloggers and audio streamers of all stripes. Four of the mics are available now and one, the Wavo Pro DS, comes out in March.

Joby’s deeper embrace of the microphone market doesn’t come as a complete surprise. After all, its parent company, Vitic, recently bought two microphone brands — Rycote in 2018 and Audix in January.

Wavo Pro

Joby’s flagship microphone, the Wavo Pro (pictured above) is a shotgun mic aimed at vloggers who use mirrorless cameras. It features active noise reduction designed to filter out background distractions. Its companion app for iOS and Android helps monitor sound levels. And handy LEDs on the front and back provide visual feedback about your recordings. The company said it designed the mic to pair with the latest mirrorless cameras to capture “broadcast-caliber audio.”

If the Wave Pro is a bit too pricey, you can snag the Wave Pro DS for less, starting in March. It features a more streamlined interface. But it lacks mobile app control, a secondary mic input and active noise reduction. That makes it better-suited to those who mostly record indoors. However, the model features a high-pass filter to help clean lower frequencies. And, like the Wavo Pro, it includes an onboard “safe track” that helps when you accidentally clip a recording.

If you like to talk to the camera while on the move, the Wavo Air gives you a nifty new wireless option for smartphones and mirrorless cameras. Joby called the Wavo Air an “instant-pairing” wireless microphone kit “designed for creators who need freedom in front of the camera.” Like the Rode Wireless Go II, it offers two clip-on lavalier mics and a transmitter. The 2.4GHz wireless mic system claims a 50m range and six hour of battery life. Those don’t quite measure up to the Rode’s performance, but the Wavo Air is a little cheaper.

For those in need of something tiny and discreet (and without wireless connectivity), the Wavo Lav Pro is a 3.5mm lavalier mic with a 2.5m-long cable. It’s Joby’s first pro-grade lav mic. The little capsule mic comes with a foam windshield and weighs in at just 12g. It’s designed to work well with the Wavo Pro and other Joby audio gear.
