Redesigned MacBook Pro could arrive this summer, larger iMac in the works

A redesigned MacBook Pro could hit Apple Store shelves as early as this summer, Bloomberg reported Tuesday.

It will come in 14- and 16-inch screen sizes, with a redesigned chassis, MagSafe charger, next-gen M-series chip and the return of the HDMI port and SD card reader. The last time Apple released a new MacBook Pro was November 2020.

Bloomberg served up some specifics about the next-gen chips that will power the new laptops:

“For the new MacBook Pros, Apple is planning two different chips, codenamed Jade C-Chop and Jade C-Die: both include eight high-performance cores and two energy-efficient cores for a total of 10, but will be offered in either 16 or 32 graphics core variations.

The high-performance cores kick in for more complex jobs, while the energy-efficient cores operate at slower speeds for more basic needs like web browsing, preserving battery life. The new chips differ from the M1’s design, which has four high-performance cores, four energy-efficient cores and eight graphics cores in the current 13-inch MacBook Pro.”

The report says the new Apple chips will support up to 64GB of memory (versus a maximum of 16GB for the M1). They also will boast an upgraded Neural Engine for machine learning tasks. And they will enable the addition of more Thunderbolt ports.

A previous report suggested Apple’s M2 chip could debut in July.

Other new Macs on the way as well

Today’s Bloomberg report also says Apple is working on a new Mac mini with the same M2 chip, as well as a revamped MacBook Air, new Mac Pro and an Apple Silicon iMac with a larger display. The report doesn’t shed too much light on these devices. But it says, with regard to the iMac, “development … was paused months ago in part to let Apple focus on releasing the redesigned 24-inch model this month.”

The current M1 iMac lands in stores this Friday. Review embargoes lifted today, with most concluding it is a winner of a computer, although the display size is one Apple hasn’t used since 2009. If Apple does release a 27-inch Apple Silicon iMac — or, potentially, even larger — that would likely be of interest to a whole lot of people.
