Fans of the Apple TV+ sci-fi series For All Mankind can enjoy a free augmented-reality application that lets them virtually handle objects from the alternate-history show.
Season two — which premiers in February on Apple’s streaming service — begins about a decade after the events of season one. The For All Mankind: Time Capsule AR app helps bridge the gap.
“I was intrigued from the very beginning at the idea that we could use AR to immerse the audience in the alternate history aspect of the series, explaining and illustrating some of the historical events and technological advances that are implied in the show but which we never had a chance to fully present,” said Ron Moore, creator and executive producer of the ongoing show.
The software takes AR to the limits thanks to the LiDAR scanner built into the iPhone 12 Pro series and 2020 iPad Pro. For example, an old slide projector in the app can display photos projected on any wall in their home.
The application uses objects to reveal the lives of Danny Stevens and his parents, astronauts Gordo and Tracy Stevens, in the decade between season one and season two. Apple offers a taste of the application in a video trailer:
For All Mankind: Time Capsule is available now on the Apple App Store. There are versions for iPhone and iPad.
For All Mankind visits an alternate history
In For All Mankind, critical events of the Space Race don’t play out the way they did in our world. The first season of covers America’s reaction to seeing a Russian become the first man on the moon. It is available to stream now on Apple TV+.
Season two jumps forward to 1983, with tensions between America and its communist arch-rival at their height. It will begin airing on Friday, February 19, 2021 with a first episode. The remaining nine will air one per week on subsequent Fridays.
