Apple has now stopped signing iOS 14.1 and iPadOS 14.1 following last week’s release of iOS 14.2. Users who have already updated can no longer downgrade their devices to the earlier firmware.

iOS 14.2 made its public debut on November 5, bringing a whole bunch of new emoji, and integrating Shazam music recognition into Control Center. It also brought some necessary enhancements and bug fixes.

We’re yet to hear of any major problems with the latest release — and that’s good now that iOS 14.1 is no longer installable.

iOS 14.1 no longer signed by Apple

If you’re still running iOS 14.1, you have nothing to worry about. Your devices will continue to function as normal. However, if you’re already running iOS 14.2, or you update now, you cannot return to iOS 14.1.

It’s unlikely you will want to return to iOS 14.1 anyway. Apple stops signing older firmwares for security reasons, and in an effort to prevent jailbreaking. But if that’s not something you do, it won’t affect you.

If you have run into any issues with iOS 14.2, you’ll now have to wait for iOS 14.3 for a fix. Apple made the beta available to registered developers on Thursday, so it’ll be a few weeks before its public debut.
