Joke unboxing shows just how ‘mini’ the iPhone 12 mini could have been

iPhone 12 mini unboxing
Apple's new iPhone 12 mini is small. But not quite this small.

The iPhone 12 mini won’t ship until November 13, but a video doing the rounds on Chinese social media shows an unboxing of Apple’s new miniature iPhone. Well, kind of.

The joke video shows the unboxing of an impressively accurate, shrunk-down copy of Apple’s iPhone mini. It’s reminiscent of the tiny cellphone in 2001’s Ben Stiller comedy Zoolander. And it’s kind of awesome.

The video was shared on Weibo by user Xiao1u. Cult of Mac tried to get hold of the person behind the video, but has been unable to do so. (If you happen to be reading this, Xiao1u, get in touch with more information about how you created the video.) Either way, the sight of a capsule-size iPhone 12 mini is a pretty amusing gag. As mentioned above, it reminds me of the below Zoolander clip:

The video was attached in a response tweet to an image, posted by Apple leaker L0vetodream, showing what appears to be the actual new iPhone 12 mini.

iPhone 12 mini unboxing (of sorts)

The iPhone 12 mini will be available to preorder on November 6. They will then ship November 13. The iPhone 12 mini is, in every way, a smaller version of the iPhone 12, a handset Cult of Mac unequivocally recommends. I’ve argued previously that it is the most compelling iPhone of the year.

Even if it’s not quite as tiny as this latest video suggests.
