Sofia Coppola’s forthcoming Apple TV+ movie On the Rocks will premiere at the New York Film Festival, which runs from September 17 through October 11 this year.

The movie reunites director Sofia Coppola with actor Bill Murray for the first time since 2003’s Lost in Translation. That movie won Coppola the Oscar for best original screenplay, while Murray was nominated for his acting performance.

On the Rocks is the story of a young mom in New York who has doubts about her marriage. She winds up going on an adventure with her dad. The movie also stars Rashida Jones and Marlon Wayans.

On the Rocks was the first original movie Apple snapped up, although it was not the first to arrive on the streaming service. Apple acquired it last January, shortly before it went into production. Director Sofia Coppola is also working on a second project for Apple. This will reportedly be an adaptation of Edith Wharton’s The Custom of the Country.

The movie is reportedly set to debut on Apple TV+ in October. Given that Apple has reportedly made it a big focus to win awards, it will be interesting to see how the movie is received. I think Lost in Translation is a cinematic masterpiece. I’ve not been as bowled over by Coppola’s subsequent works, although that is more a testament to the unique greatness of Lost in Translation than a profound criticism of her work. Nonetheless, she and Murray created such a brilliant pairing on that movie it will be fascinating to see if they can recapture the magic.
