A version of Google Maps for the Apple Watch starts rolling on Monday. The goal of this app is to allow users to navigate by car, bike, public transit or on foot, without having to look at an iPhone.
Also, Google Maps for Apple’s CarPlay Dashboard got some convenient new features today.
Google Maps on your wrist
The Apple Watch version of Google’s navigation software offers step-by-step directions to destinations previously saved, like Home or Work. However, an iPhone is necessary for all other destinations. Users can can start navigating from their handset and then continue on the wearable.
The software offers estimated arrival times but (despite its name) not maps.
The Google Maps app for the Apple Watch starts rolling out worldwide in the coming weeks. When it arrives, it’ll have to compete with the Apple Maps app for this wearable, which has been available for years.
CarPlay improvements too
Those who choose can use Google Maps on the CarPlay Dashboard. And starting on Monday, the app acquired some new features.
It now allows users to switch or pause songs from a media app, rewind or fast forward podcasts or audiobooks, or check calendar appointments, all without ever leaving turn-by-turn navigation. The information is displayed in a split screen view.
