The first Macs running ARM-based processors designed by Apple could be out as early as the fourth quarter of 2020, according to trusted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. This will supposedly bring significant performance gains.
We’ll possibly know for sure tomorrow, as Apple will supposedly reveal its plans to move macOS to its A-series processors at WWDC 2020.
Smaller macBook and iMac might be the first ARM-based Macs
The initial macOS models with ARM, rather than Intel, processors will be a 13.3-inch macBook and a 24-inch iMac, according a research note from Kuo. These might be out near the end of this year or early in 2020.
Apple’s transition away from Intel could be complete by 2021, predicts this analyst. By then, all new Macs will run ARM-based chips designed by Apple. The company apparently doesn’t plan to offer shoppers Intel or ARM alternatives of future models. It’s ARM all the way.
But there supposedly are still Intel-based Macs coming down the pike. Kuo said a new iMac coming in the July-to-September period will run an Intel chip, for example. This might, or might not, be announced at WWDC 2020 on Monday.

The advantage for users of the switch is supposedly a gigantic boost in performance. macOS computers running Apple’s own processors could be 50% or even 100% faster than Intel Macs, according to Kuo.
Apple’s chip manufacturer, TSMC, can make smaller, more efficient chips than Intel. TheApple A13 at the heart of this autumn’s iPhone is expected to be the first A-series CPU made with a 5-nanometer process. Rival Intel won’t get a less-efficient 7nm processor on the market before 2021.
On the other side of the coin, third-party developers will have to recompile their applications for the new processor architecture. This is likely to reduce the amount of apps available for ARM-based Macs early in the transition process.
Apple will announce the developer tools needed to make the change at WWDC 2020 on Monday, according to the analyst from TF International Securities analyst. Plenty of other sources have said the same.
