Mr. Pumpkin 2: Walls of Kowloon, a surreal, but intriguing, new game created by the makers of the popular Isoland game series (and the original Mr. Pumpkin Adventure, natch!), has landed in the App Store.

A hand-drawn point-and-click adventure that allows you to explore Hong Kong’s endlessly fascinating Kowloon Walled City, it’s the perfect game to play in lockdown. You know, to remind you that actually being able to walk around cities is a thing most of us used to do!

Check out the trailer below.

Exploring Kowloon Walled City

For those who don’t known about the Kowloon Walled City, it was an ungoverned, heavily populated, part of Hong Kong stretching around 6.4 acres. From the 1950s through the 70s, it was controlled by local triads. Eventually it was demolished in the early 1990s. But not before it had inspired countless science fiction dystopias in the process. As developers Lilith Games write:

“When it was finally demolished in 1993, Hong Kong’s Kowloon Walled City was the most densely populated place on the planet. Fifty thousand people lived and worked in an area the size of an average city block. A patchwork network of transportation systems, crude but efficient, connected the City’s labyrinthine passageways and buildings.

Today all that remains are the glimpses of that marvelous existence captured in old newspaper clippings, home videos, and photo albums. But the City still lives in the memories of its former residents — and in the imaginations of cyberpunk fans worldwide.”

I haven’t had the opportunity to dive into Mr. Pumpkin 2: Walls of Kowloon yet, but it looks pretty great — especially for anyone who grew up playing point-and-click adventure games. It arrived in the App Store earlier this month, but was covered Thursday by Touch Arcade, which is how I found out about it.

The previous games from its makers are well worth checking out. I’ve therefore got every reason to be excited about this one, too. Heck, if the only thing you get out of it is a deeper understanding of Kowloon Walled City, it’ll be money well spent!

You can download Mr. Pumpkin 2: Walls of Kowloon from the App Store here. It costs $1.99 and offers in-app purchases.
