Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, probably the most beloved entry in the action-adventure gothic Castlevania franchise, got a surprise release on mobile Tuesday.

Originally released on PlayStation in 1997, Symphony of the Night changed the series’ direction. It did this by borrowing not from the existing Castlevania formula, but by augmenting it with RPG elements from games like Zelda II and Metroid. It’s pretty darn great.

If you’ve played Symphony of the Night before, you’ll know what you’re in for. If you haven’t, well, you’re in for a treat. It’s a side-scrolling platformer, in which you play Alucard, the son of Dracula, who must fight through his father’s castle to finally put an end to the bloodthirsty monster.

Castlevania perfectly blends action RGP with massive exploration, kickass boss battles, awesome music, and terrific pixel art.

It was one of the best games to grace the original PlayStation. I first played it on the Sega Saturn in 1998. Since then, ports of it have been released on PSP, Xbox 360 and, most recently, the PlayStation 4. Until now, though, it’s been MIA from mobile.

Making Symphony of the Night even better is the fact that it is fully compatible with game controllers. If the lack of good touch controls is your reason for not playing platformers on iOS, that’s your problem solved right there!

You can download Castlevania: Symphony of the Night from the App Store here. At just $2.99, that’s approximately 1/20th of what I probably paid for it new 20 years ago.
