It’s the Olympic Games this summer — and Sonic the Hedgehog and friends are ready to help mark the occasion.
Coming to iOS May 7, the game will pit Sonic against the villainous Dr. Robotnik/Eggman in a battle for, err, sporting excellence in Tokyo. It sounds kind of crazy, but looks like it could be a fair amount of fun. Check out the trailer below.
As can be seen in the trailer, Sonic at the Olympic Games – Tokyo 2020 features a bevy of minigame-style contests. Sports include the likes of the 400-meter hurdle, trampoline, hammer toss, table tennis, diving, archery, long jump, karate, sport climbing, and more.
These don’t exactly stick to sport sim realism, but rather go for gravity-defying cartoon wackiness.
Done well, I could certainly see the game being a hit, cashing in on both Olympics excitement and Sonic’s current Hollywood-aided revival in popularity. I whiled away many an hour on the Mario Party games back in the day, so this looks right up my alley.
You can pre-order Sonic at the Olympic Games – Tokyo 2020 here. 100,000 pre-registrations will unlock a special Ocean View music track. 300,000 and 500,000 pre-registrations will unlock Training Points, for extra events, and a mascot badge. Interestingly, the game looks to be unlockable via a single in-app purchase, similar to Super Mario Run. That’s surprising since many games of this type opt for in-app purchases and a freemium model.
