A brand-new Tetris game today landed on iOS — just a day after EA confirmed it is retiring its own lineup of Tetris titles.

The game promises to deliver the traditional Tetris gameplay experience millions of fans around the world already know and love. But this is not the Tetris Royale title that was announced last year.

Fans were pretty upset on Wednesday when we discovered EA plans to ditch its three official Tetris mobile games in April. We knew it wouldn’t be the end of the popular puzzler on iOS, however.

Blue Planet Software, sole agent for the Tetris brand, told Cult of Mac that N3TWORK would be the exclusive developer of new Tetris games going forward.

Little did we know a brand-new title would arrive a day later.

Tetris lives on with new iOS game

The new (and free!) game is classic Tetris as we’ve always known it. The gameplay will be immediately familiar to anyone who has played a traditional Tetris title in the past.

For now, it delivers single-player block-building fun. But later on, there will be “much more” to come.

Tetris is one of the most recognizable games in the world and we’re delighted today to make that experience available for free to millions of people worldwide,” said Neil Young, founder and CEO of N3TWORK.

“We’re launching Tetris with a traditional solo gameplay mode, but we want fans to know that we’ve got so much more in store for them, and this is just the foundation of an incredible Tetris app experience.”

The new Tetris game is played using intuitive swipe controls — like those from EA. It also uses haptic feedback that’s new to mobile, and five different themes that let you switch up its look.

You can download the game today from the App Store and Google Play.

The Tetris Company is also planning another mobile title — Tetris Royale — which was announced last June. It will be an online multiplayer title like Tetris 99 on Nintendo Switch.

There’s no word yet on when that game will be available.
