Facebook owns 4 of the top 10 apps of the past decade
Facebook had a great decade. At least as far as downloads are concerned.

Facebook owns the top 4 most downloaded apps of the last decade, analytics firm App Annie reports.

The app analytics platform runs down its list of the most downloaded and highest grossing apps of the past decade. This covers both iOS and Android. While Facebook may have had a tough time PR-wise recently, there’s no doubting its levels of downloads dominance.

The most downloaded apps worldwide are as follows:

1. Facebook
2. Facebook Messenger
3. WhatsApp
4. Instagram
5. Snapchat
6. Skype
7. TikTok
8. UC Browser
9. YouTube
10. Twitter

None of these are particularly surprising. However, it certainly highlights how dominant Facebook is in the app space. The social network increasingly adopted a mobile-first strategy as the 2010s wore on. Facebook Messenger was introduced as its own app in 2011. Meanwhile, Facebook bought WhatsApp for approximately $19.3 billion in February 2014. It purchased Instagram for $1 billion in April 2012.

Recently, there has been discussion about possible antitrust investigations into Facebook. The U.S. Justice Department is reportedly preparing an investigation. It is not entirely clear what the focus will be. However, it could relate to the number of companies it has acquired. Facebook has bought close to 90 companies since 2003. This could count as squashing potential competition.

App Annie‘s list also highlights the top apps in terms of spending. Unsurprisingly, Netflix comes in at no. 1 on the list. The ranking goes as follows:

1. Netflix
2. Tinder
3. Pandora Music
4. Tencent Video
5. LINE
6. iQIYI
7. Spotify
8. YouTube
9. HBO Now
10. Kwai

The top games by downloads puts Subway Surfers in the number one spot. This is because of its “strong adoption” in India, representing more than 15% of its downloads.

1. Subway Surfers
2. Candy Crush Saga
3. Temple Run 2
4. My Talking Tom
5. Clash of Clans
6. Pou
7. Hill Climb Racing
8. Minion Rush
9. Fruit Ninja
10. 8 Ball Pool

The top 10 games when it came to consumer spending were:

1. Clash of Clans
2. Monster Strike
3. Candy Crush Saga
4. Puzzle & Dragons
5. Fate/Grand Order
6. Honor of Kings
7. Fantasy Westward Journey
8. Pokémon GO
9. Game of War – Fire Age
10. Clash Royale
