Pittsburgh Pennsylvania might be the next U.S. city that Apple plans to expand its footprint in.
According to a new report from local newspaper, Apple is reportedly in talks with real estate developers to move into the free 90,000 square-feet at the historic Pittsburgh Athletic Association building on Fifth Avenue in Oakland.
Pittsburgh is one of the few U.S. cities outside of California that Apple has corporate offices at. The iPhone-maker currently that Apple has about 50 employees that work at its office in the Strip District.
Real estate sources that spoke to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette claim Apple has been talking to Walnut Capital about leasing office space at the PAA. It’s unclear if the move would be an expansion or if Apple would just be moving its workers to the new building. It could even just become a new town square Apple store.
The PAA has all the historic trappings Apple looks for in buildings. Completed in 1911, the building featured sports facilities, spa services and restaurants. The clubhouse is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is currently undergoing renovations and is slated to reopen in 2020.
Another one of the reasons Apple might be interested in the building is its close proximity to the University of Pittsburg and Carnegie Mellon University right across the street. Those two schools produce some of the top talent for tech in the area. Apple’s Pittsburgh hub is used to help develop iWork apps like Keynote.
