You could be waiting longer than anticipated to get your hands on Apple’s next-generation iPad Pro. One trusted analyst says the refresh will arrive in early 2020 with the iPhone SE 2, while the 16-inch MacBook Pro will come even later.
This could mean that October Apple event we’ve all been waiting for won’t happen after all.
Reliable TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo today revealed that Apple could ship its first AR glasses during the second quarter of next year. And that’s not all he had to say this week.
Kuo also delivered disappointing news for Apple fans hoping to pick up a new iPad Pro or MacBook Pro before the end of 2019. It seems Cupertino could keep us waiting longer for updated hardware.
iPad Pro refresh months away
Kuo’s timeline of upcoming Apple hardware doesn’t mention any other devices for 2019 after the iPhone 11 lineup. Next in line are the iPhone SE 2 and new iPad Pros — but they won’t arrive until 2020.
They should land during the first quarter of next year, Kuo says. So we may be waiting just a few months. Previously, we expected refreshed iPad Pros to appear sometime in October.
Will they be worth the wait? Well, Kuo says the new slates will pack rear-facing, time-of-flight sensors like those on the front of the 2018 iPad Pro, which allow for improved augmented reality.
They also will pack Apple’s newest A13 Bionic processor. But little else is known about the next-generation iPad Pro for now.
New MacBook on the way
Kuo reaffirms his prediction of a new iPhone SE 2, aimed at iPhone 6 owners, for early 2020. That’s expected to look a lot like iPhone 8, but with a faster A13 Bionic chip and a much smaller price tag.
Kuo also says Apple plans to launch a new MacBook in the second quarter of 2020. It’s not completely clear if this is the new 16-inch MacBook Pro we’re all immensely excited about.
Prior to this, Apple watchers thought the new machine would arrive late this year. But again, there is no more hardware for 2019 on Kuo’s prediction list.
If indeed that is the case, the October Apple event we’ve all been expecting may not happen.
Will there be an October Apple event?
It seems unlikely Apple would hold an event for minor Mac and Apple TV updates. And it’s even more unlikely Apple would unveil an iPad Pro refresh now if the tablet won’t be ready to ship until next year.
However, Apple may want another event to launch Mac Pro and its new Pro Display XDR. It has already teased these onstage, but it likely has more to share that deserves better than a press release. Plus, the November 1 launch of the Apple TV+ streaming video service might warrant yet another showcase.
