More than 8 out of 10 teens have an iPhone, a new piece of research by analysts at Piper Jaffray claims.
The “Taking Stock with Teens” report notes that 83% of teenagers own an Apple handset. That’s the highest rate since Piper Jaffray began tracking this information. Last year, the report claimed that 82% owned an iPhone.
The figures are particularly interesting at a point when the smartphone market has seemingly reached saturation point. Year-over-year growth of iPhone sales shows that the massive leaps of early years are now largely over.
Overall, 86% of respondents said that they wanted an iPhone. Meanwhile, Apple Watches were owned by 20% of teens surveyed. 23% said that wanted to buy one in the next six months.
By comparison, 10% of users said that they owned Android devices. On the smartwatch front, 2% said that they owned Samsung Gear smartwatches.
The survey isn’t comprehensive, of course. It involved 9,500 teenagers. While not a tiny sample, that’s still a small fraction of the total teenage base of potential teenage customers in the United States. Nonetheless, it’s a reminder that — even 12 years after the iPhone debuted — it’s still a much sought-after product among teens. And the Apple Watch is following in its footsteps, too.
