Until Nintendo gets around to releasing classic game Star Fox on iOS, fans of the franchise may want to check out Sky Squadron. An upcoming vehicle-based blaster, it’s set to land in the App Store in early 2020.

If you can’t wait that long, however, its developer has just opened it up for an open beta. This is the perfect opportunity for early adopters to take it for a spin.

Sky Squadron is an on-rails shooter. You get to move your vehicle a limited amount, but the focus is on controlling the targeting and shooting. In exchange for successfully completing missions, players earn plunder. They can then use this to upgrade their fleet of World War I-inspired aircraft.

Developer Trick Shot describes Sky Squadron as a mashup of Star Fox and the Crimson Skies series.

Sky Squadron’s creators previously cooked up the brilliant Astro Attack. Sky Squadron looks to take some of those same ideas and place them into a gorgeous 3D environment.

Sky Squadron promises randomly generated levels, which should considerably extend replayability. If you’re interested in giving it a go, head over to the app’s TestFlight page. I haven’t yet had the opportunity to put it through its paces. Hopefully that will change later this week.
