Sid Meier’s Civilization VI is a triumph on iOS. But it’s about to get even better — courtesy of an upcoming new expansion pack in the form of Gathering Storm.

Arriving on Windows, Mac and Linux computers earlier in 2019, the expansion is set to come to iPhone and iPad later this year.

No date has yet been announced, but it’s great to hear that it is on the way. Gathering Storm is the second official expansion pack for strategy game Civilization VI. Yesterday, developers Aspyr Media dropped first expansion Rise and Fall as a $29.99 in-app purchase update for the game.

The upcoming Gathering Storm update adds weather and natural disasters. These include volcanic eruptions, river floods, rising sea levels, hurricanes, dust storms, blizzards, tornadoes, and droughts. There’s also improved Diplomacy, new civilizations and units for you to try out.

Explore, Expand, Exploit, Exterminate

Civilization VI first showed up on iPad, before arriving on iPhone in October last year. For those who haven’t played it before, it’s a turn-based 4X strategy game (eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate), in which your goal is to rule the world. It’s truly an astonishing feat, and a great game.

That comes at a price, though. The original title costs $59.99 to buy, plus an extra $30 for Rise and Fall. Presumably Gathering Storm will retail for the same amount. If you’re somewhat on the fence, however, you can download Civilization VI for free, and play through the first 60 turns before deciding whether or not it’s for you. If it is, you’re going to get a whole lot of fun out of this.
