Heart Machine’s acclaimed 2D action RPG Hyper Light Drifter won hearts and minds when it launched on Mac, PC, and consoles back in 2016.

Now, three years later, it’s finally coming to the iOS App Store. And, fortunately, fans don’t have too much longer to wait.

For those unfamiliar with it, Hyper Light Drifter channels the look of 8- and 16-bit games. It’s a little bit like The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, but using a style reminiscent of Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP.

The game was originally developed through a Kickstarter campaign. Requesting just $27,000, its developers wound up receiving $645,000.

The game is now available for pre-order on the App Store. Its official description is as follows:

“Echoes of a dark and violent past resonate throughout a savage land, steeped in treasure and blood. Drifters of this world are the collectors of forgotten knowledge, lost technologies and broken histories. Our Drifter is haunted by an insatiable illness, traveling further into the lands of Buried Time, hoping to discover a way to quiet the vicious disease.

Hyper Light Drifter is an action adventure RPG in the vein of the best 16-bit classics, with modernized mechanics and designs on a much grander scale. Explore a beautiful, vast and ruined world riddled with dangers and lost technologies.”

What to expect

The game promises 120 fps gameplay on iPad Pro, and 60 fps on iPhone and iPad. There’s also MFi controller compatibility, all the content from the original game, plus new weapons, enemies and areas from the game’s special edition.

It’s priced at $4.99, with the launch date scheduled for July 25, 2019. Hyper Light Drifter: Special Edition is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices running iOS 12 or later.
