Square camera bumps are shaping up to be one of the biggest smartphone trends of 2019.

Leaked images of Google’s upcoming Pixel 4 smartphone surfaced online today, revealing some surprising design changes for the handset, including a square in the back that packs multiple cameras. It looks awfully similar to the leaked iPhone 11 renderings we’ve seen so far.

Take a closer took:

Unbox Therapy’s Lewis Hilsenteger went hands-on with the mockups in the video above. He says that there will be two rear-facing cameras along with a spectral sensor used to handle light flickers. Pricebaba tweeted similar renderings with the square bump, too, so it sounds like this could be the real deal.

Update: Google decided to beat the leakers and tweeted a picture of the Pixel 4.

2019 iPhones getting square camera bump too?

Apple is also expected to include a square camera bump on the the back of two of the new 2019 iPhones. The bump reportedly will house three camera lenses, including a super-wide-angle lens.

This could be the first year that Google and Apple’s flagship phones feature an eerily similar design. Usually, Google puts a fingerprint sensor on the back of its phones, but it appears that will get removed on the Pixel 4.

Hilsenteger also says the Pixel 4 won’t have a notch on the front. Instead, it will feature a big bezel at the top with five imaging units inside.

Google likely will unveil the Pixel 4 in October, as per the company’s tradition the last few years. If the hardware is ready early, though, we wouldn’t be surprised if the search giant moves up the announcement date to beat the iPhone 11 to the market.
