Apple Pay Express Transit is on its way to London, giving travelers a quick and easy way to pay for rides.
Transport for London (TfL) has confirmed it is working closely with Apple to enable the feature “in the coming months.” It promises more information will be available at a later date.
Express Transit, introduced with iOS 12.3 earlier this month, lets you pay at subway and train stations simply by tapping your iPhone or Apple Watch. Unlike regular Apple Pay payments, it does not require authentication, which makes the process incredibly quick.
Express Transit is currently supported on New York City’s MTA, Poland’s TriMet, with Suica cards in Japan, and with Chinese transit cards in Beijing and Shanghai. Now TfL is confident that London will be added to the list soon.
Express Transit makes Apple Pay even faster
“We are having positive discussions with Apple about enabling Express Transit on Apple devices on the TfL network,” a TfL spokesperson told The Verge. “More information about timing and plans will be available at a later date.”
In a post on Twitter, TfL confirms it is “working closely with Apple to allow the benefits of [Express Transit] to be introduced on London’s transport network in the coming months.”
When it does arrive, paying for a ride will be as easy as tapping your iPhone or Apple Watch on Oyster terminals. And because authentication isn’t necessary, the process will be near instantaneous.
