My friend Tyler is a world traveler. Tyler has a favorite game he likes to play on his iPhone. When he’s in a busy area like an airport, he likes to AirDrop a picture of his naked ass next to a waterfall to unspecting iPhone users.
The photo is fairly harmless and usually draws some laughs. But the next time Tyler flies through New York City, his favorite game could earn him some jailtime thanks to a newly proposed law that would make it illegal to send sexually explicit images to anyone that doesn’t want to received them (which is pretty much everyone).
AirDrop first debuted on the iPhone in 2011. The feature allows iPhones, iPads and Macs to send photos and videos to other Apple device owners over WiFi and Bluetooth. There has been a problem with people absuing the feature to send unwanted sexual photos to women for years.
Three New York City councilmen proposed a new law in New York City this week that would make it illegal “for a person to send an unsolicited sexually explicit video or image to another person with intent to harass, annoy or alarm such other person.”
According to the bill, anyone found guilty of AirDropping thier unsavory pics to strangers could be subject to a $1,000 fine and up to one year in jail.
“In the old days, you had to have a long trench coat and good running shoes. Technology has made it significantly easier to be a creep,” one of the councilmen told the New York Times.
If you’ve been sexually harrased over AirDrop, there is a simple solution that doesn’t require you to turn the feature off. Go to General section in the iPhone Settings app, tap AirDrop and then select “Contacts Only” so that only people in your contacts can send you content.
For all the creepers that haven’t learned that no one wants to see your dick pics, get ready for the day of reckoning.
“Keep your pic in your pants,” another councilmen told the Times. “If you do it, the message we are sending is that the repercussion is a fine or jail time.”
