There’s still a slight chance Apple could release updated AirPods before the end of the 2018 holiday season.

A newly granted Bluetooth SIG certification indicates that new wireless earpods are in the pipeline. Tim Cook recently bragged that Apple has the best product lineup ever going into the holidays, but there may not be enough time to add AirPods 2.0 to the roster.

The certification uncovered by MySmartPrice.com shows these will have Bluetooth 5.0. The addition of Bluetooth 5.0 will give them better battery life and improved connectivity.

So where are the new AirPods?

There aren’t any other details to be gleaned from the filing such as a release date. Apple hosted a keynote in Brooklyn last week where it debuted the new iPad Pro, MacBook Air and Mac mini. With AirPods among the products that failed to get any stage time, it seems like Apple is holding them until the beginning of 2019.

New AirPods could include a new wireless charging case, better battery life, health-related features and improved Siri integration. Hopefully, they’ll debut with Apple’s AirPower wireless charging mat, which has gone completely off the radar since Apple previewed it last year.
