Today marks seven years since Steve Jobs passed away at the age of 56. Paying homage to his former boss, Apple CEO Tim Cook posted a message on Twitter in which he made clear how much Steve meant to him personally — and to Apple as a whole.

“Steve showed me—and all of us—what it means to serve humanity,” Cook wrote. “We miss him, today and every day, and we’ll never forget the example he set for us.”

Cook first joined Apple in 1998, soon after Steve Jobs returned to the company — but long before Apple made its astonishing turnaround with back-to-back hits including the iPod, iTunes, the iPhone, and the iPad.

“You could kind of talk to Steve about something very big and if it resonated with him, he would just say ‘OK’ and you could do it,” Cook recalled in an interview on the David Rubenstein Show: Peer to Peer earlier this year. “It was like a total revelation for me that a company could run like this, because I was used to these layers of buracracy and studies … Apple was totally different. I realized that if I couldn’t get something done, I could just go to the nearest mirror and look at it and that was the reason.”

Cook has regularly paid tribute to Steve during his tenure as Apple CEO. In a 2014 interview, he revealed that Jobs’ office “is still left as it was” on the fourth floor of the company’s now-former headquarters at 1 Infinite Loop. “His name is still on the door,” said Cook.

At Jobs’ insistence, the Apple Park campus wasn’t named the Steve Jobs campus, as some suggested it should be. But his name remains synonymous with every new Apple product launch, courtesy of the Steve Jobs Theater, where Apple’s media events are now staged.
