The world’s not fair. Most people haven’t even gotten their hands on the new iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, and already a video of Apple’s top newest handsets being purposely damaged has shown up online.
It’s the work of YouTube channel TechSmartt, which describes it as the “ultimate drop test” for Apple’s new handsets. And while we think that the “ultimate” suffix might be better saved for a more scientific drop test, we’ll take what we can get at this early stage!
The three types of drop
TechSmartt carries out three tests during the video, which also uses the iPhone X as a sort of control subject. First up is the pocket drop, which is intended to simulate an iPhone tumbling from your pocket when you’re out and about. Next up is the head height drop, the kind of fall that you might get if you drop your iPhone during a particularly animated phone conversation. Finally, there’s a 10-foot drop, which simulates… well, a 10-foot drop.
All three iPhones manage to survive the pocket drop. During the head height drop, the iPhone X suffers a crack on the screen, while the iPhone XS Max gets a slight mark, and the iPhone XS survives intact. Finally, during the 10-foot drop test, the iPhone X and iPhone XS Max shatter, while the iPhone XS survives.
As mentioned, it’s unscientific enough that we can’t really draw any definite conclusions from it. But it does potentially suggest that the new iPhones are more robust than last year’s iPhone X. And that, particularly if you’re a clumsy sort, the regular iPhone XS may be the phone for you. Unless you wait for the cheaper iPhone XR, that is!
