An Apple reseller in Malaysia had to temporarily close after 11,000 would-be customers turned up to buy a small selection of discounted iOS and Mac products.

The incident took place over the weekend after the Switch store announced that it was selling off its stock of demo products, including iPhone models 5s to 7, iPads, Apple TVs, MacBooks and more. These devices were discounted to as little as $25 and as much as $514. Unfortunately, it seems that someone underestimated demand.

Fans began queuing up outside the store 19 hours before the weekend sale commenced, despite the store saying that this was not advised. The lines reached out of the building and into the parking lot. One user on Twitter likened the ensuing Black Friday-style scene to The Hunger Games.

The store briefly opened its doors, but quickly closed up shop when it became obvious how many people were demanding the products they had queued up for. “Due to security reason, [sic] we regret to inform you that the clearance sale will be put on hold until further notice,” the store wrote on Facebook.

In a later post it apologized for the Demo Clearance Event and admitted that it did not “expect the magnitude” of people who turned up. Switch only had 200 devices to sell, although 11,000 fans turned up.

And people wonder why Apple doesn’t offer big Black Friday discounts!
