Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed to employees in an email this week that Apple will make $2 million worth of donations to organizations “who work to rid our country of hate.”

The donations come as a response to the tragic events of Charlottesville which Cook told employees have been deeply troubling for him personally. Cook, who has first hand experience with the devastating impacts of the KKK, took aim at President Donald Trump in his letter for supporting the white supremacists and says that Apple plans to play an important role in bringing about positive change.

To kick things off, Apple will donate $1 million to both the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defamation League. In his email that was posted on Reddit, Cook says that Apple will add an option in iTunes to make it easy for others to donate to the SPLC too. Apple will also match employee donations to the organization two-for-one.

Here’s the full letter:

Team,

Like so many of you, equality is at the core of my beliefs and values. The events of the past several days have been deeply troubling for me, and I’ve heard from many people at Apple who are saddened, outraged or confused.

What occurred in Charlottesville has no place in our country. Hate is a cancer, and left unchecked it destroys everything in its path. Its scars last generations. History has taught us this time and time again, both in the United States and countries around the world.

We must not witness or permit such hate and bigotry in our country, and we must be unequivocal about it. This is not about the left or the right, conservative or liberal. It is about human decency and morality. I disagree with the president and others who believe that there is a moral equivalence between white supremacists and Nazis, and those who oppose them by standing up for human rights. Equating the two runs counter to our ideals as Americans.

Regardless of your political views, we must all stand together on this one point — that we are all equal. As a company, through our actions, our products and our voice, we will always work to ensure that everyone is treated equally and with respect.

I believe Apple has led by example, and we’re going to keep doing that. We have always welcomed people from every walk of life to our stores around the world and showed them that Apple is inclusive of everyone. We empower people to share their views and express themselves through our products.

In the wake of the tragic and repulsive events in Charlottesville, we are stepping up to help organizations who work to rid our country of hate. Apple will be making contributions of $1 million each to the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defamation League. We will also match two-for-one our employees’ donations to these and several other human rights groups, between now and September 30.

In the coming days, iTunes will offer users an easy way to join us in directly supporting the work of the SPLC.

Dr. Martin Luther King said, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter.” So, we will continue to speak up. These have been dark days, but I remain as optimistic as ever that the future is bright. Apple can and will play an important role in bringing about positive change.

Best,

Tim

  • This guy again? He’s getting extremely tiresome.

    • Robert Bloch

No one forced you to spend any of your precious time here.

      • Can’t wait for his memo on the slaughter in Barcelona today.

      • iHead

Are you loving the slaughter and hate?

  • perryrants

i find it odd that after condeming a particular group he went on to say “that we are all equal. [apple] will always work to ensure that everyone is treated
equally and with respect [except for those we don’t like]. the billionaire fool also praised “those who oppose them [nazis] by standing up for human rights” fcuk me. antifa was armed to the teeth and started the rumble.

Stalin opposed nazis. I wonder if Cook thinks he was a great guy

    • CelestialTerrestrial

But there are OTHER reasons to not like Stalin, but Stalin is not the one in question, so why are you changing the discussion to something that’s not the same thing? you can have people that don’t like Nazis that also don’t like Stalin. You are aware of that, right? Stalin was just a different kind of dictator, but a dictator none the less. You simply do not know how to properly assess the situation and you need to study critical thinking so you can see how your arguments are completely fallacious. You seem to be using inductive rather than deductive reasoning. You need to work on that.

      • jonas nielsen

Buddy, i’d ease up on the insults if were you, considering your lack of reading comprehension and context awareness

You’re only displaying your own ignorance

      • CelestialTerrestrial

Why would you think that Tim Cook would like Stalin? He was a dictator. Tim Cook doesn’t want a socialist dictator running this country. Remember, he supported people of both parties during the last election. We live in a Democracy where there is more than one party and it’s not being run by a Dictator. So where has Tim Cook even suggested our country to be run by a socialist Dictator? Seriously. What’s wrong with you? I made no direct insults to you, only your line of reasoning. There’s a difference.

      • jonas nielsen

Alright, let’s try to simplify this so even leftwingers can keep up

Tim Cook says you can’t equate nazis and the people using violence against nazis

The implication here is of course that Antifa are the good guys so it’s ok they use violence. You know, standard liberal doublethink

So in order to mock this hypocritical and extremely simplistic view, i mentioned one of the most famous anti-nazis in history, who just so happened to also be one of the worst mass murderers. Incidentally he was also a communist which is something he shares with Antifa

By the way it seems this site is now censoring anti-left replies as my 2 other replies to you have been stuck in pending for almost 24 hours. So i won’t be replying to you anymore

      • CelestialTerrestrial

I can’t help you, Jonas. You need psychological help.

      • CelestialTerrestrial

But your line of reasoning is fallacious on so many levels. go seek help from a psychologist that specializes in helping racist people deal with their issues. You have issues Jonas. Lots of them.

      • jonas nielsen

I stated facts. Those numbers are from the Obama administration

        Fact can’t be racist

Your entire argument on the other hand has been based on throwing around insults (seriously, go through your posts and count the amount of times you’ve resorted to ad hominem)

Also, you have yet to provide ANY proof of anything you’ve stated. You make claims and demand people accept those as facts and yet you claim to understand the concept of critical thinking. You’re doing the exact opposite

Someone needs psychological help but it’s not me, it’s the guy who cannot keep on topic, is incapable of countering points, throws around insults constantly, denies objective facts and then try to claim the high road

I hope, for your sake, that you’re young and you simply lack a proper education

      • CelestialTerrestrial

Your facts don’t prove your hypothesis. You use fallacious reasoning, Please stop bothering me, you simply don’t listen, you spout support for Neo Nazi’s and racist mentality and I have no time to help you. You should spend some time with a psychologist. Maybe they can help you.

You are simply not someone I wish to speak to anymore.

      • CelestialTerrestrial

Antifa is not trying to create a Totalitarian society like Stalin. They are just anti-fascists that are standing up against Fascism, plain and simple nothing else. They aren’t trying to create a society or government that’s based on Stalin’s ideology. They are just antifascists and they are trying to protect people at these protests that are not facists against these Fascists that stir up violence. The Neo Nazi’s typically are the aggressors and Antifa is typically just defending others from these Aggressors because the Police aren’t stepping in fast enough to stop the Neo Nazi’s.

It is possible to be against Nazi’s AND Stalin at the same time and be either Liberal OR Conservative. Imagine that. People from both the Liberal and Conservative parties can meet in the middle and be against both Nazi’s AND Stalin mentality at the same time.

Your problem and that of people with YOUR mentality, is that you only see in black and white, so if you aren’t white, then you are black. Sorry, the world simply doesn’t work that way.. And you need to grow up out of your brainwashed mentality perpetrated by the extreme right.
