Yep, that's not how an iPhone should look!

Apple is investigating an iPhone 7 Plus that reportedly exploded and began pouring out smoke earlier this week. A video of the incident went viral when it was posted on Twitter.

“We are in touch with the customer and looking into it,” the Apple representative said.

The rose gold iPhone 7 Plus belonged to Brianna Olivas, who says her Sprint iPhone first stopped working and refused to turn on. She took it to an Apple store, where employees told her there was no defect and managed to get the phone up and running again. However, the very next day it caught fire while sitting on a dresser, according to Olivas.

“The next morning I was asleep with my phone charging next to my head, my boyfriend grabbed the phone and put it on the dresser,” Olivas said. “He went the the [sic] restroom … and from the corner of his eye he saw my phone steaming and [heard] a squealing noise. By the time he got over to the phone it had already caught fire, he quickly grabbed the phone and threw it in the restroom … as soon as he threw it in the restroom is [sic] blew up and more smoke started coming out of the phone.”

While this isn’t the first time an iPhone has caught fire, this type of mishap is very much in the public consciousness right now due to Samsung’s Note 7 debacle.

The highly praised Samsung handset was involved in incidents such as torching a family’s jeep and causing the evacuation of a Southwest Airlines flight after a passenger’s Note 7 emitted a thick gray-green smoke and burned a hole in the plane’s carpet.

Samsung issued a worldwide recall, only to find that replacement units also caught fire. Ultimately, Samsung cancelled the device, bricked remaining units and issued a full-page apology in the newspaper.

The iPhone 7 Plus has been out long enough for us to know Olivas’ experience isn’t a widespread problem, but the sooner engineers can get to the bottom of the mystery the better!
