The release of a new version of iOS, and especially a major release like iOS 8, poses quite the dilemma to jailbreakers. Do you stick with your jailbroken iPhone or iPad and miss out on iOS 8’s exciting new features, or do you cave to temptation, install iOS 8, and lose your jailbreak indefinitely?
Sadly, we don’t know when an iOS 8 jailbreak will be released. It could be a while. But rest assured, if you’re tempted by iOS 8’s new features, the jailbreak community is already hard at work cracking it open.
Team Pangu, the Chinese hacking team that successfully jailbroke iOS 7.1.1, has posted on Chinese microblogging site Weibu, saying that an iOS 8 jailbreak is already being worked on.
Here’s the full message, translated.
[Reminder] Just 1 day before iOS 8 official release, guess that devices except iPhone 4 can’t be restored with 7.1.2 firmware. If you want to jailbreak please grab the last moment. For iOS 8, we are already on the way…
Of course, there’s no time frame available indicating when Team Pangu might actually succeed, but it’s still reassuring to know that one of the more talented teams in the jailbreak community is already working on exploiting iOS 8 and getting Cydia onto the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
Can’t wait that long? Hey, with iOS 8 and its exciting new features like third-party keyboards, there’s less reason than ever to jailbreak. Why wait to upgrade?

With iOS 8, there should be significantly less users needing to jailbreak their devices. And I realize a good percentage of those who do so have no actual idea as to why they need to jailbreak their devices. I see some friends do that just to change the colors of the keyboard (really..?) while they have little to no general knowledge of technology. And I see that now as ios 8 pretty much covers most of the basic needs of jail breaking a device, it leaves only a handful of users who do know what they’re doing to actually need it, thus drastically lowering the profits they get out of developing software for such purposes, I assume in a year or two, the markets for jailbroken devices may just become extreme small and rare
control center toggles, you can not deactivate 3g even from settings. You have a point, but Apple seems to always leave something out of their thinking for us to jailbreak our phones.
That’s true. Speaking of which I was hoping they’d allow easier access to voice memo, like a shortcut button in control center. It’s now like a forgotten child, left to live with his uncle (iMessages).. Maybe apple does care about the lives of those developers and merchants who sell jailbreaking products after all
There will ALWAYS be a reason for jailbreaking. With every new iOS release, Apple manages to “forget” important features that the jailbreak community had for a long time (time stamp messages, control center, Spotlight search, notification center, custom keyboards).
Just look at reddit.com/r/jailbreak. The community is growing and growing, even after iOS 7 and 8.
Airplane mode plus wifi = no 3G
it means no cellular at all. Not related to the request.
3G??
people still use 3g?
All I see is LTE on my ipad and iphone
False. See below explanation.
Why would someone jailbreak? Hmm, let’s see… Free Tether, Haptic Feedback, File System Browsing, Games, Desktop Effects (Beryl), Trick WiFi-Only Apps into using LTE, Hiding Icons, Adding Gestures to the Touch Screen, Setting a Homepage in Safari, iBlacklist, Firewall, Modify Carrier, and yes, Theming. Theming of Font, Font-Color, Icons, Dynamic Wallpapers, The UI, Sounds, Ringtones, and yes, Keyboards. There is so much you can do on a jailbreak, I could go on and on, but I think you get the point. I hardly expect iOS8 or any subsequent version to address all these neat capabilities. The default iOS always feels so unfinished without the abilities a jailbreak enables. I’ll patiently wait for it and enjoy my fully-functional iPhone 5 for now. Though, the new iPhone does look very cool. :)
Absolutely. Many have no idea about half of these. I’ll as adding columns and rows as well as icon scaling up and (more importantly) down. The home screen with stock icons this big is a total waste of screen real estate ESPECIALLY for the new iPhone 6 plus.
Not to mention setting up lighttpd, mysql and php and running a web server with database driven sites such as wordpress or other CMS’s, or just have web developer coding fun on the go with your device!
And yes, the theming! I like using Bigify, Dockshift and Barrel to show other non-jailbreakers just some of the things Jailbreaking brings and what IOS does not yet deliver!
Does iOS8 let you move multi icons yet? Or output any iOS screen or App on your iOS device to HDMI or composite video so that you can display on video projectors etc? – Well with Cydia apps like MultiIconMover and Display Out, you can!
Thanks to all those people have have contributed to the jailbreaking cause for allowing my device to really useful, and fun!
and free apps?
Meh….most true jail breakers aren’t jail breaking just to get pirated apps. Old topic.
If you can afford a $800-1000 phone, you can probably afford .99 cent apps.
Who pays full price?
250$ with contract lol
And will be 350$ when my contract expires in 3 months for the new iPhone
I guess you expect me to buy my software since I spent so much money on pc as well?
Adding Columns and rows as well as icon scaling are the biggest reasons for me. The icons are way too big and always have been.
You’re e missing a TON of reasons to jailbreak….literally about 20 VERY valid reasons even with iOS 8.
on my iPhone 5 I am running 7.1.2 jailbroken and I really like the ICaughtU Pro it’s similar to find my iPhone only way better it prevents someone turning off the device it also snaps a picture and sends it to my email address and also gives me the location so I can find it and the perp. I also use the activator app to setup my home button and volume up and down buttons to control my music on my phone without opening it so I can change song simply by pressing up to skip or down to go back if you press and hold either it reverts back to volume double click the home button plays and pauses the music I can do this easily while driving I have no need to even look at the device. If apple would incorporate just these little things into the phones I would not jailbreak. I will wait for the jailbreak before I upgrade to ios8.and I will also be waiting until about june 2015 to get my iPhone 6 plus.
I mean….all apple needs to do is just give me contact pics…that’s the ONLY thing missing lol….why?
I believe I saw in the keynote that this is going to be standard on the 6Plus with the added screen real estate.
iPhone 6 Plus only for now. I’m with ya tho!
I will not be upgrading to the iPhone 6 or iOS 8 until the jailbreak comes
out. The only feature I need is tethering – it is priceless with the
amount of travel I do.
Guess what feature is disabled for folks on grandfathered AT&T “unlimited” data plans.
Makes sense since AT&T wants you to get so irritated that you will drop your “unlimited” plan.
to be fair add Verizon to this and Sprint.
True but I gained minutes and more data by dropping unlimited. Att quit throttling after 3GB EVEN THOUGH I was unlimited and unlimited talk and text an it was cheaper and I got more by dumping unlimited grandfathered status.
Not the backdoor way that people with unlimited plans need. MyWi has saved me thousands!
Actually you can. I too don’t want to loose my tethering. I came across this the other day http://tether.com/iphone/. It was originally an app they pulled from the store after less then a day. The only catch is you have to pay $30 a year to renew the license. But on the plus side it beats paying a monthly tethering plan via your carrier. Also it doesn’t use the carriers APN. So they can’t see you tethering like MyWi does
That’s always the case. Many people don’t buy or update new until a Jailbreal is released.
“…there’s less reason than ever to jailbreak.”
Nope, Nope, and Nope.
MyWi for free tethering is the number one reason to jailbreak, and the networks won’t be lifting that additional fee that they can milk out of subscribers ever. BrowserChooser to make Chrome my default browser, and Nitrous to gives all apps access to Apples Nitro Javascript Engine normally reserved for just stock iOS Apps. AdBlocker to do the obvious in web browsers. Flex2 has also been pretty essential in tweaking many apps, and removing pesky ads. I’m also eternally disappointed that it doesn’t look like I can have five icons in my dock, even on the enormous 6Plus screen. Come on, theres plenty of room for that option.
Those are some of the best, but theres always potential for new jb innovations. The jailbreak community is responsible for spear heading most of apples iOS “innovations.” Wireless snyching with iTunes, the new app switcher format…yeah those were jailbreak apps first.
Tetherme is better. Costs less and doesn’t use the carriers APN. so they can’t see you tethering if you use it alot
Huh? I’ve been tethering via MyWi since my 4 and have never had any problems with it.
Nitrous is thankfully not needed on iOS 8, since Apple allowed all apps to use the Nitro Javascript engine. http://zoompf.com/blog/2014/06/apples-nitro-javascript-engine-available-to-all-apps
Thanks for the info, that’s fantastic news
Anyone knows how is That theme called?
MovieBox, Grooveshark, TetherMe all primary reasons for jailbreaking. Interface customization (more, different shaped icons on each page) and other theming capabilities will always make jailbreaking worthwhile.
Dude, movie box is where it’s at
Jailbreak for ios 8 is still impt for me. There r a lot of apps available on cydia that i cant get from appstore.
I can’t wait till the jailbreak comes out for ios 8 I’m still on ios 7 on my ipad so I’ll be gladly announcing that I can still get my favor write tweeks form cydia I hope that the language rev team keeps up the good work as for tweeks my most favor write tweeks are localiap
The writer is obviously someone who doesn’t understand jailbreakers.
We jailbreak because Apple do NOT “Get it right”.
Third party keyboards? I have had that for 3 years through jailbreaking.
Im still running on IOS6, simply because iBeacon and Airdrop dont matter to me. Also, I already HAD the other features through jailbreaking and the new IOS 8 hasnt changed that.
I can now message my location? Whippee!!… really Apple, couldnt you have made a more comprehensive update than that? I already have enough stalkers through my various social media apps. Wouldnt it have been better to be able to share ANY location? Then I could say “Meet me in 10min here:”.
Each successive update from Apple is underwhelming to me. They could have given these updates as feature improvements throughout the year to reward their customers, but instead they use it as a spur to get people to buy the next device… which is (surprise!) only now comparable to other devices on the market.
Apple have been playing a catch up game ever since the release of the iphone 4.
In features, Android or jailbreaks get there first.
In hardware, Android get there first.
The best thing Apple did was create a touch screen interface which was fast and responsive. Everything thereafter has been about trying to keep up
I use my phone as a WiFi hotspot so jailbreaking is very important to me.
What jail breaking is the best! My iphone/ipad/iPod stand out compared to un-jail broken devices. Themes/ flex to get rid of annoying things in apps/ Zeppelin/ tether me/ boot logos/ speed intensifier/ springtomize/ ifile/ I cleaner/ winter board/ mxtube/ eclipse/ and so much more I couldn’t go without my devices having. So many people jailbreak devices because you can control everything on your device that you want to. It will never die.
What a shitty article. Of course they’re working on it, and the translation sucks. Not hating but this article could have been written about iOS 6 and would’ve made as much sense.
Please. I’ve got a jailbroken iPhone on ios 7.1.2. No way I’ll update to iOs 8. I have too many options which will not be available on iOS8. Toggling 3g/lte/vibration, timed airplane mode, touching screen to unlock/lock the screen (home button will last longer), answering calls by waving a hand (in winter it really does the job – try to do the same with your gloves on!), a number of other options I can’t think of now, but well, no way I’ll upgrade to iOS 8 until there’s another jailbreak. Then I’ll get an iPhone 6…just for the sake of a bigger screen. Don’t fool ourselves, there’s no change in iPhone 6.
