Elgato’s Thunderbolt Dock has a few unique features that are appropriate for a company that makes video accessories for Apple devices. First, there’s an HDMI port around back, and second, the USB ports put out enough juice to charge your iPad at a decent speed.
In fact the dock seems made for folks who work with audio and video. The dock is powered by a 12V, 5A supply, and around the back there are two Thunderbolt ports, two USB 3.0 ports, plus Ethernet and HDMI. That alone is useful for viewing and shifting big files over a local network.

On the front of the slick-looking aluminum-clad hub are headphone, mic and a third USB port so you don’t have to struggle plug in less-used extras.
The whole setup looks almost perfect for podcasters, but anyone with a MacBook who wants some AV power at their desk without a bunch of cable-wrangling will be happy with this thing.
How much? $230, or €230, depending on where you live.

You do realize this is a carbon copy of the CalDigit thunderbolt docking station, yes?
CalDigit has been out with the one that looks identical to this since the middle last year! And it’s cheaper! I love my CalDigit thunderbolt docking station, it’s been a awesome addition to my desk.
And yes, it can even charge an iPad 2! It’s got full powered USB 3.0 ports as well. In fact I have to wonder if they licensed their design it looks so identical!
Will using one of these allow me to drive a second Thunderbolt display on my 2012 Mac Mini? Or am I stuck going to an iMac to get a second (or even third) 27″ display?
