Following Gmail’s snazzy addition of categories for easily filtering your inbox mail, the Gmail iOS app has also been updated to support the functionality.

On the web, the way Gmail’s new inbox works is pretty simple. At the top of your Gmail inbox, you’ll have a number of customizable tabs. For example, you could set-up a tab for your social network notifications, and another for your closest friends, and another for tracking numbers. Clicking a tab will filter to messages of that type. You can have up to five tabs, and dragging them around will re-arrange them.

If you want to use these categories in the updated Gmail app, you can now access it from the account sidebar, although you still have to set it all up from the website version.

There’s also new notifications support. With today’s update, you can now decide if you want notifications for all new mail, none or only messages that are considered primary.

You can grab the update now on the App Store here.
