Steve Jobs: “We Don’t See USB 3 Taking Off”

If you’re expecting an imminent refresh of Apple’s MacBook, Mac Pro and iMac lines supporting the blistering fast USB 3.0 standard, don’t hold your breath: Steve Jobs says they don’t care about USB 3.0 right now.

An Apple fan curious about Cupertino’s continued ambivalence to USB 3.0 took it upon himself to send Steve an email. The response is a little disheartening.

We don’t see USB 3 taking off at this time. No support from Intel, for example.

I’m guessing Steve sees USB 3.0 like he does Blu-Ray: an unnecessary bridge standard between the past (optical) and the clear future (streaming video). In the case of USB 3.0, the past is the USB standard… the future is Light Peak, Intel’s new optical cable technology that is not only frighteningly fast, but would act as a single universal replacement for all of the buses in your machine: USB, FireWire, HDMi, PCI Express, SATA, even SCSI. Yeah, I guess I can wait for that.
