Much beloved Spotify has been trying to launch in America for years now. During that time, they’ve faced considerable challenges in convincing a music industry worried about alienating Apple to give the greenlight to their excellent all-you-can-stream subscription service.
But it’s finally come together, and now there’s even a firm date being thrown around: the freemium music service will launch in the States between July 5th and july 15th.
The news comes from a pub called Noisecast, who claim to have obtained an email from a major label executive naming those dates as Spotify’s official launch window with all of the labels on board.
The service will have changed from its European counterpart when it does launch, though. While Spotify’s excellent desktop and mobile offerings will be available domestically as well, Spotify’s free subscription service will not be: by reports, Spotify’s ad-supported free service had to go before Warner Music would ink a deal.
I’m glad to see Spotify finally coming to the States, but much of me wonders if this is all too late at this point. Not only is iTunes Match about to make all of our music libraries available in the cloud, but Spotify-like services like Rdio are already doing a great job offering subscription music streaming to Americans. Spotify’s a great service, but it may have missed its window.

I wonder how this service will stack up… Anyone used it personally?

2-3 weeks away and no press release or anything? I’ll believe it when it happens, not before. Spotify is the new Duke Nukem

iTunes Match doesn’t stream… It’s hardly a competing piece of software at this point if you ask me.
I’ve been subscribed to it for years here in the UK. Best music service i’ve ever used and the iPhone app is amazing also.
Been using it for years and i have to say with the recent client updates and smart phone apps, its the best. The iPhone app is amazing, its not got an iPad app which is annoying..
Knew this was written by John Brownlee before even checking when I saw the typo in the second paragraph. Typical Brownlee rush-job with no proofing. You don’t capitalize the names of months, JB?
Have you actually used Spotify?….”Spotify’s excellent desktop…”. Really? It’s not the best; functional but clunky in my view. iTunes far superior.
Also, based on what we are told of iTunes Match they are not comparable services as one does not stream (iTunes if you dont know!)
I Love Spotify. I hope you enjoy it when it arrives over the pond.
I live in Europe and used Spotify for 1 year. This is my number 1 most used application (except the phone app :)
Syncing music to offline playlist on iPhone or Android works great!
People in the States should really look forward to this.
I don’t get what all the hype is? There are plenty of high profile all you can stream services like Napster that also allow you to download directly albums and playlists to the iphone for offline play… How is this any better then those???
Couldn’t agree more. Here’s another satisified Spotify Premium user from the Netherlands :)
You obviously have no grammar knowledge! You always capitalise months! They are like names!
