Sandy Bridge iMacs Coming Tomorrow, May 3rd?

Citing sources “familiar with the matter,” a new report suggests Apple will launch its new lineup of iMacs tomorrow, May 3rd, featuring Intel’s newest family of Sandy Bridge processors, and the company’s high-speed Thunderbolt port in place of the current Mini DisplayPort.

Apple has recently been taking steps to ensure a smooth roll-out of the new iMacs, according to the same sources, who apparently continue to provide accurate information when it comes to Apple’s plans, says the AppleInsider report. One confirmed that a “visual night” is scheduled for the early morning hours of May 3rd, “so it is highly likely that whatever new product that is going to be refreshed or introduced will be done on [that day].”

A “visual night” is when several Apple retail employees are called in to work throughout the evening and into the early hours of the morning to make changes to store layouts, often removing old products to make room for new ones.

Previous reports have already speculated that Apple was getting ready for the imminent launch of updated iMacs, and stock of the current generation all-in-one is slowly diminishing. The last time the iMac family was updated was some 9 months ago.

I find no use for desktop computers these days. Why spend the money on a standalone unit when a MacBook Pro can travel everywhere you want it to. Can you tell I’m not that interested in the iMac refresh.

Although having a iMac allows me to have a great monitor for my gaming PC.

Some people still using a desktop computers, and some people don’t like using laptop for work. I’m one of those guys.
I prefer buy an iMac than a MBP + another large screen monitor (cost more) and I don’t do a lot of travel with laptop

It’s for folks that use computer for heavy work – e.g. programming…, where you don’t necessarily need a computer to be portable, but you especially need a big screen…

Exactly! I need a big screen and a computer that doesn’t take up a lot of my rooms real estate. I’m a programmer :)

Agreed, i have done the same mistake twice now and never again! I got rid of my Mac mini a few years back then my 24″ iMac a few months back in exchange for MacBook’s thinking i would be fine without a desktop.

Fact of the matter is although i love my 11″ MBA which is my current main Apple machine, it’s size, weight and portability is great but sometimes having the larger screen for serious work, movie watching and playing games is much more agreeable with me and if this new line up of iMac’s is announced tomorrow i will be getting one!

Well I changed over to desktops after a burglary in which my laptop was stolen. They didn’t take any difficult to carry items. So now I have an iMac and a Windows desktop. Of course a burglar could turn up with a vehicle but it makes things that bit more difficult for them.

And for people who are into music production (like myself). I’m just going to wait a little longer to get mine… waiting for Lion to be the factory OS so with a clean install I don’t have to upgrade from Snow Leopard.

Does 2560×1440 mean anything to you? If not, then stick with your MBP.

  12. Ges says:

you can return it up to 14 days

Has anyone heard anything about when the Mac Mini refresh is coming? It’s usually just before the iMac refreshes if memory serves me.

I was just at our local Apple Store here in Indianapolis, just as UPS had arrived and the employees were wheeling a large dolly full of about 10 iMacs through the store, into the backroom. I laughed and asked if those were the new Sandy Bridge models for tomorrow and was given a wink and a head nod by the Genius helping me… FWIW…

Have you considered buying a kensington lock for the lock slot? Just chain your desktop/portable to your table and lets see a burglar try and get away with a table :)

I frequently use my MacBook Pro with an external HD display and use an apple keyboard and magic trackpad with my portable tucked away on a vertical stand. So in essence I have my portable set up like a desktop. I try not to let Apple own my wallet, so I try and use every Apple product I buy in every way shape and form. Even snagged a new discounted Apple TV for the iPad 2 because of Airplay and I’m thrilled I did. With those two setups, I personally don’t need a desktop…or a TV for that matter.

Same, using a 13″ 2010 with a HD display to use Logic, been good so far, but i want a faster quad core cpu. My desktop i built has much better specs than my Mac but Logic doesn’t run on windows and im playing video games less and less, so i might consider an iMac if they put a good enough GPU in them. For right now, even my desktop that is 3 years old still beats the newest iMacs. Hopefully tomorrows refresh will be better….i’m excited.
