Ping Introduces Social Playlists

Ping just got a micron less useless on Friday with the addition of new functionality: the ability to make social playlists and share them with friends.

It’s pretty straight forward. Just go to the Ping icon in iTunes and click “Create A New Playlist” on the right-hand side of the screen. From there, you specify a name and a description for your playlist, then add songs by searching for them on the iTunes stores. Once published, your followers can rate, review, buy tracks and even add new songs to your playlist.

It’s definitely a nice addition to Ping, but given the shortage of users on iTunes’ in-built social network and the inability to allow your followers to actually stream your playlists once before they start buying up tracks, I doubt this is going to bring many new users to the fold. If only Apple could work out a deal with Facebook, there’d be a lot more reason to be excited about improvements like this.
