The OS 3.1.1 update for iPhone and iPod touch is available now from Apple’s servers. Plug in your device, go to iTunes and hit “Update.”
Details after the jump.
I’m downloading and installing it now. It weighs in at 306.2Mbytes and is taking forever to download.
According to the install notes, it includes:
- Improved syncing for music, movies, TV shows, podcasts, and photos
- iTunes U content organization
- Redeem iTunes Gift Cards, codes, and certificates in the App Store
- Display available iTunes account credits in the App Store and iTunes Store
- Save video from Mail and MMS into Camera Roll
- Option to ”Save as new clip” when trimming a video on iPhone 3GS
- Better iPhone 3G Wi-Fi performance when Bluetooth is turned on
- Remotely lock iPhone with a passcode via MobileMe
- Use Voice Control on iPhone 3GS with Bluetooth headsets
- Paste phone numbers into the keypad
- Option to use Home button to turn on accessibility features on iPhone 3GS
- Warn when visiting fraudulent websites in Safari (anti-phishing)
- Improved Exchange calendar syncing and invitation handling
- Fixes issue that cause some app icons to display incorrectly

3.1.1 for iPod Touch does not recognize headsets (with microphone), but only headphones (without) over bluetooth. 3.1 for iPhone does recognize the microphone – what gives? Is Apple going cheap on us, or trying to make us wait for the next, next update?

I have the very same issue as Carols, I’ve tried re-installing iTunes, using a different XP account, re-dowloading the update, opening ports, disabled my firewall… does anyone have a solution? I’m stuck with a paperweight, I feel like I’ve lost a limb!

Aaron,
if you are referring to a cell like headset, it uses a different type of bluetooth profile. I believe it is A2DP. HOpe that helps.

Hey guys, I’ve found out that my anti-virus, and anti spyware program caused me some problems with trying to download and install the new update. Try disabling your anti-virus program and that might work.
Hope that helps

What your going to have to do is go to settings, general, home, and then touch iPod.
Then when you double tap the home button it brings you to your music.
I know, it’s not that little quick music, but complain to apple not me.

I went to download a new song from my itunes library onto my iphone (3G) and itunes asked me to upgrade to the new iphone software (3.1.1 I think). It spend 29 mins updating it then gave me an error message that it can’t update it. THEN it wiped out EVERYTHING from my iphone AND itunes on my computer. I have NO back up info. No contacts, appts, photos, apps, songs….nothing. Now I’m supposed to restore it to it’s original condition. Apple Tech Support is closed right now but heck, they’ll hear from me in the morning. So much for me loving the iphone!!
