UPDATED: Install Pirated AppStore Apps On Your iPhone [Jailbreak Superguide]

UPDATE: I was initially a little surprised by the vociferous reaction to this post about installing Installous, an unofficial App Store for pirated apps. The instructions are a quick Google search away and we’re hardly the first to publish an Installous how-to.

I guess we raised a few red flags — like putting “How To Pirate Apps” in the headline and including a half-hearted disclaimer. The intent was for it to be part of a comprehensive Jailbreaking Superguide that deals with all the things people want to do when they jailbreak their devices, including playing around with Installous.

The intent for the Superguide is to be straightforward and frank — a one-stop shop for everything people want to know about jailbreaking. We don’t condone piracy, but it’s a fact that a lot of people jailbreak their devices to experiment with things like Installous. I find it dishonest and hypocritical when publications skirt around issues like this; like publishing BitTorrent guides and pretending that no one’s going to download a pirated movie.

However, it’s obviously disingenuous to say we condemn piracy in a post that shows readers how to pirate software. Personally, I’ve always believed publishing information is one thing and acting on that information is another. I’ve always liked publications that informed me about things we’re not supposed to do. I can then make my own moral decision whether to act on that information or not.

But while pirating is something people indisputably do when jailbreaking, it was a misstep for us to actually include a comprehensive DIY. Whatever our intentions, it teeters on advocacy, and was thoughtlessly disrespectful to the many app developers out there who make their livings off of programs we admire and think people should pay for.

As our readers have pointed out in comments and on Twitter, we crossed a line here. CultofMac.com isn’t some modern-day Anarchist Cookbook. We support developers and enjoy their many wonderful creations. Saying there are ways out there to install cracked apps is one thing, showing people how to do it is another.

So my apologies to readers for misjudging this, and to developers for being insensitive and opportunistic.

Also, please don’t attack the author, Sayam. This was my idea, not his. He’s a freelance writer and I commissioned him to write it, so please don’t be mean to him.

– Leander.

PS: The BitTorrent link to “pirate” copies of my Cult of Mac book posted in the comments is actually a publisher-sanctioned seed. No Starch Press turned it into an e-book and seeded it. So please help yourself, it’s free and legal.

You should really charge your ipod!

How can you CLAIM to discourage this behavior when you are publishing a step by step guide?

    I call bullshit.

I’m all for the jailbroken route (or was before iOS4) but this is kind of a dick move. You’re showing people how to install stolen apps which are how devs make their money. I know Google will show you this same thing if looking hard enough, but, this is a site built around the Mac and iStuff, not a pirate site. This should stay on the iPhone modding sites, not a site run by a guy with Apple books on the shelves and is obviously a fan.

Sorry but you can not oppose something while giving a step by step guide on how to do it.

Really disappointed that you guys would even post this…

This is ridiculous. Take this down immediately. Developers work long hard hours to create great apps for you guys, but not so you can just pirate them for free. Application development is their job! It’s how they get food on the table!

Jailbreaking is now legal in the US, but stealing people’s apps isn’t. Do you realize this is a step-by-step guide of how to break the law? Weak attempt to get page views Cult of Mac.

Wow, I’m really ashamed of Cult of Mac. I really thought you all supported iOS developers, and showed support for their applications. WIth this post, a lot of users, such as myself, aren’t very impressed. I’ve seen a lot of stories of Cult of Mac that I loved, but this has to be my worst. The managing editor should remove this post, or a lot of users will be lost.

    -Devin

Take this down please. This is not the type of article you want on your site, especially if you want people to take you seriously.

There’s a line between trying to be helpful and teaching people how to exploit, and I believe you crossed that line.

Jailbreaking might not be illegal anymore but pirating software still IS.

I’m all for showing people how to jailbreak and install legal applications, but you are telling people how to break the law. This is over the line. But what can you expect from a 16 year old author living in India where piracy is the norm.

Cult of Mac should fire you over something like this. I certainly would not tolerate it. Just because the information is legal, doesn’t mean you should post it.

What next Cult of Mac, how to create your own bombs, an Anarchist Cookbook by COM?

Articles like this are why the jailbreak community is looked at by a lot of people in a negative light. I’m all for jailbreaking for the purpose of customization and control, especially after today’s events, but software piracy is no better than any other form of theft.

It appears there is no overseeing editor for this site. I can’t believe you think this is a good idea to post. I’m sure people at Apple will be knocking at your door, you are also stealing from them remember. I feel more for the devs you’re screwing but I think its Apple you’re going to have a problem with, but you don’t care, you’re just a kid so its going to be Leander’s head, not yours.

Agreed, jailbreak may not be illegal, but pirating software is.

You’re showing people how to steal someone’s work. That isn’t what cydia is about, nor it is what jailbreaking is about.

Shame on you. What would Kanye’s mother think?

    What would Jeebus do?

To even dream for a moment that this guide will be used for any purpose but the illegal use of applications developers have worked their asses off to create, is ludicrous.

You ought to be ashamed of yourself for even considering posting this. Please take it down.

    Hey Cult of Mac!

Thanks for this awesome and informative guide. Allow me to provide you with a guide for what you should do next:

    1. Assemble a large number of dead males in the 20-40 age range in a preferably quiet, windowless, and air conditioned room.
    2. Acquire a butcher’s knife.
    3. Use the knife to remove the genitalia of the aforementioned dead males and place them into a bag.
    4. Eat said bag of dicks.

Seriously? Respect –> 0. I’m unsubscribing from this feed. Useless folk working here.

I’m sick of cheap sensation hunting and poor journalistic value of articles at this website. Done.

Google Reader -> Cult Of Mac -> Unsubscribe.

Despite your “disclaimer” you are still providing a step-by-step guide on how to do something illegal — something of which you at least claim to disapprove.

“It’s important to try before you buy” is no excuse. It’s still copyright infringement and still illegal, whether the pirate tries the app once and deletes it, or retains it forever. This excuse has been discredited since at least the Napster days.

This article should be taken down.

“After a flood of Cult of Mac reader emails…”

“Cult of Mac strongly opposes software piracy…”

Are you sure these are readers you want? It sounds like you’re really split from them in terms of some core values. You’re allowed to say no, guys.

Take this down immediately! You’ll ruin everything!

This is disgusting. Stealing money directly out of the hands of developers, all because of the oh-so-precious page hits this post will garner?

Short term page hits don’t mean much when they alienate the very readership that sustains your site. You just lost yourself a whole bunch of readers, and earned a massive amount of ill will.

You should be ashamed of yourself.

This is a disgrace – take this down asap. Even a 16-year old should better – this is Stealing – plain and simple. I used to checkthis site out – not anymore. This is ridiculous. REMOVE!

Well, now I have a reason to use Safari Reader on Cultofmac from this day forward. If I even bother reading, I will make sure that all I do is cost you bandwidth and never give you a single ad view. Hey, it’s not STEALING.

Don’t hand us your crap. Publishing this tells us you could care less about developers. You not only need to take this down but publish an apology to all the developers who work hard to make the idevices so great.

You really should get some legal advice before publishing something like this.

@ Ian – Ha, I have safari adblock installed anyway. Fuck ‘em.

This is a disgrace – the development community are your audience and you are encouraging people to steal from them? Do you not realise that developer and designers have families to feed, mortgages to pay, overheads to pay for… how the hell can you sleep at night. Take it down.

    Despicable.

Here’s a great link on how to perform a denial of service attack against Cult of Mac. I don’t condone doing it — it’s just provided for informational purposes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_LGe6bW6jI

Um, holy crap, I can’t believe you ran this story. Have you no shame? Your disclaimer is utter, complete bullshit. If it were anywhere near true then you wouldn’t have run this story.

Cult of Mac: I thought this was a decent, reputable web site, but now I see that I was mistaken.

Sayam: Why do you want to make it hard for iPhone developers to earn a living?

Ah, just realized that Sayam is only 16. This is what happens when you let kids play on your blog without supervising them. :)

    This is pretty sad.

ditto. (I’m a developer myself–our app took 2 guys 8-9 months to finish and we sell it for a measly $10… please don’t steal!)

Wow. I’m so glad I unsubscribed to this site a long time ago, but this happened to pop up in my twitter stream.

This site is nothing more than sensationalism, caring more about the site views than the developers you CLAIM to ‘support.’

Can I email you guys about anything illegal I may want to do? Because I see you don’t approve of it but you may just give me a step-by-step guide of it anyway, right?

Cult of Mac… I’ve been reading your site for a while, commented many times, even been emailed directly by one of their writers for a friendly discussion continuing from one of my comments. However, the site is now removed from my RSS feed.

Next up – how to shoplift a MacBook from Best Buy!

(We don’t condone stealing…but want if you want to try OSX before you buy?!?)

In case anybody was wondering where to get the Cult of Mac book:
    http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4071799/Cult_of_Mac_by_Leander_Kahney
    (no checkout required! instant download!)

Wow, this post is an epic failure, did not expected this from the Cult of Mac…

Dirty thiefs. Deleting my CultofMac bookmarks and forever banishing you immoral crackpots.

So, it’s OK if I take all your site’s content, and put it on my own website and put my own adverts around it?

I mean, clearly you don’t have any respect for copyright, or hard work, so you couldn’t possibly mind if someone does the same to you..

Just a reminder that some of us devs work on our apps for a living, because we believe in the platform and enjoy sharing our work. So if you kill our income, we won’t do it any more, and you won’t get any cool apps. I know it’s simple stuff, but you seem to need a refresher.

The worst of it is that this entry will perpetuate the notion of jailbreaking as a vicious thing to do, while the reality is vast majority of jailbreakers are not pirates.

I’m done with Cult of Mac.

    Bye.

Completely shameful! This should be taken off the air immediately. How can this help developers?

What kind of dipshit organization publishes an article about stealing applications and encouraging piracy?

Absolutely ridiculous. This is an embarrassment to the entire site. good riddance

Why are you fucking idiots publishing this fucking guide, so that every fucking retard with a fucking jailbroken iPhone/iPad can steal fucking great software. Take this guide offline and tell anybody asking for it: “Fuck you!”

And there i unsubscribed the Cult of Mac RSS-feed. I want a disclaimer within 24 hours from You (the writer) and from Leander Kahney (chief Editor). This is seriously bad for your reputation…

This is disgusting. Im an app dev and this really fucks me off. I’m unsubscribing and telling my followers to do the same.

    coup de grâce

Hey, Fuck You Cult of Mac!

    Asshat.

This is shit. I heard about this lame ass ‘superguide’ and just had to say how much I loathe your existence. Dicks.

We don’t personally do this, but we totally support you and your efforts to rip-off developers. So here’s where to find and how to install pirated software.

    You guys are assholes.

Wow. While I’m not all for jumping into a mob over the actions of a 16 year old, who may not know better, the fact that there’s meant to be adults running this site makes it shocking that this was allowed to be posted. I’m not even going to touch the potential legal implications, it’s just a classless thing to have done.

For a site that’s meant to serve the Apple community, to actively seek to hurt a good segment of that community seems to only be hurting yourselves in the long run. So now that developers know that Cult of Mac doesn’t care whether they succeed or fail, since clearly it’s okay to steal from them, I can’t see why they’d come back and read this site. Hopefully you get enough page views off of this to see you through losing that readership segment.

Anyone who actually likes having top notch apps developed for their iDevices will hopefully realize that stealing from them is only going to hurt further development.

I’m deleting my bookmark for this site and I’m going to stop buying Leander Kahney’s books (I’ve bought the last two). Clearly while he passes himself off as someone whose in touch with the Apple community that connection is worth trading in for a few extra ad views.

And oh I know how high handed that sounds, and how douche baggy it comes off as, but come on. I’m sure if someone posted step-by-step instructions to steal from friends of yours you’d be more than a little annoyed.

Fuck you, Cult of Mac. I hope your jobs get outsourced to India—oh, wait.

You’ve been shit for some time now.

    This is the last straw.

    Bookmark gone.

You guys just lost my RSS subscription also. So long.

Can’t believe Cult of Mac published this. Piracy is illegal and there is no excuse for this.

And to think that some people don’t consider bloggers to be journalists…

I’m sorry for not reading the other posts before I wrote this. Cultofmac, ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS?!?!?! looking the other way is one thing, but posting a detailed how-to teaching piracy?! Seriously?!?!?! Wtf, guys? I can’t respect this site anymore, that is just not cool. Apple stifles creativity enough without a big website like you making ROBBERY as easy as using the App Store. This is NOT what the EFF or the Library of congress had in mind. It’s fun to do this kind of thing, but please, PLEASE, think of the developers. Piracy is honestly not a huge threat, but it just gets bigger with publications like this. Of course you can post whatever you want, but big publications and popular blogs have a responsibility not to cause more harm than help. I really hope you reconsider before aiding a generation of thieves, making their thievery that much easier.

After a flood of emails, we are going to print instructions about growing marijuana, abusing prescription pills and Top 10 Tips For Insurance Fraud…but we don’t condone it.

This is not kool!! Don’t encourage piracy, thank you very much!

Embarrassing. Did Leander Kahney really greenlight this story?

    RIP THE SYSTEM!! PIRATE EVERYTHING!!

You gentlemen might enjoy this: http://bit.ly/9SpLsb

Thanks for the story, useful and informative.

Being a developer, this kills me. I actually used to like CultOfMac. I now hate it. You know this is just stealing from devs. Here’s a better title “How to break the law and steal from devs!”

Really poor decision to publish this article. Unsubscribing from the site’s RSS feed.

    Piracy? Seriously?

I’ve questioned you guys in the past, but damn this is it. Lost my rss feed from you guys. Take this down immediately – it shows 0 respect for iPhone Devs including myself. Ignorant kids only use this bullshit. So long, Cult of Mac.

Cult of Mac is now known as Failblog

retarded MACTARDS! This guide is NOTHING NEW! Want to shoot at the messenger? Go aheand and help yourself.

You’re such a lame crowd, you’re not even funny anymore.

Even if this isn’t what the Dev team intended there product to be used for, I still like to be able to get the full version of an app. And if it’s good I’ll support it and pay for it. If it’s crap and totally overpriced, then I just supported the downfall of that app and its developer. I won’t check this again so cuss me out all you want.

Allow me to add my voice to the many.

    Fuck you.

    This guide is a disgrace.

Oh screw you Cult of Mac.

Off my Google Reader you go.

Allow me to add my voice to the many.

    Fuck you.

This guide is a disgrace to the website. Rss has been cancelled.

O noes! It’s a mob! No, it’s the KKK! No, it’s the Larouche folks!
    How much self-righteousness…
Innocent until proven guilty, anyone? Have you ever been 16? Maybe site was hacked? SO many reasons, but oh, no, let’s burn at them at the stake!

Amazing… not one single person was able to simply put a comment alerting Cult of Mac of this post without threats or even suggest people to chill out because this post was clearly a mistake.

Do you really think that Leander & Co. condone this???

It’s a kid, for chrissakes! And like any teenager, he’s probably full of himself and boasting he’s a “journalist” at Cult of Mac — he’s just 16!

And I assume, then, that NONE of you EVER screwed up before, especially as a teen?

And before you start talking about developers livelihoods, might I remember you that the people who work at Cult of Mac also have a livelihood, so think twice before you post parodies comparing them to armed thieves. How about a touch of jihad terrorist to go with that page, uh?

I thought you were all tech-savvy enough to realize that the “owner” of a blog does not screen every post.

I just sincerely hope that all of you do indeed stop subscribing to the Cult of Mac…

Today’s a really sad day… Cult Of Mac, the best Apple-related blog we had ever seen, has become a total disillusionment… I don’t know what’s been happening with you guys today, but it makes really sad to know that Cult Of Mac is posting topics like this…
Although I totally hate jailbreaking, because of bugs and the mess it does to iOS, I don’t have anything to argue against those who do jailbreak their iPhones. But you guys have reached the critical point… I’m very disappointed with this blog, wich once has been the one-stop to Apple news…

I just decided to help you out. I’ll advertise this on every website I’m on(in a positive way).

It is pretty lame to post something like this when you don’t believe in it being done. FAIL on your part!

I don’t know this site, never read it before, found it by accident, like the article, but I’d like to comment on some of these stupid ass comments.

For all the stupid ass devs. and the like: I really don’t care if you all starve to death.
The world is full of you as it’s also full of idiots who post bad shit for what is in the end knowledge. And by my standards knowledge should be available to everyone.
    Especially cracking / reverse engineering / pen-testing

So all of you who bash the poor guy for posting this information then you should get yourselves some glasses and read the fuckin’ disclaimer.
And if you don’t like the site anymore STFU or GTFO lamers.

    Ciao.

    Wow @ the above comment.

    @CHILL-OUT

According to the Author on Twitter the editor green lighted the post:
    http://twitter.com/sayam_aggarwal
“All the haters, I just did the guide cos my editor said so, mock me if you like, IDC! Personally, I don’t use or intend to use cracked apps.”

Pathetic. Cultofmac really this desperate for hits?

    SO MUCH RAGE

    SO MUCH LULZ

No comment, no matter how eloquent or vulgar, detracts from the point that this post supports theft, which is illegal. People defending this post with comments about the age of the “journalist” can’t seem to understand WE all know right from wrong, even if we are from a 3rd-world country like India where everyone smells like ass. Camoflague it all you want – this is theft. Try your reasoning on the Apple lawyers when they get wind of this. To think they raided someone’s house for a lost prototype? They will rip the beating, bloody heart from this poor website’s editor and suck out his soul. This “guide” and the people defending it make me sad to be human.

    How does this help anybody?

This IS a real bullshit move on your part.

If I started a blog called KultofMac and copy/pasted all of your content to it, how long would it be before the cease and desist arrived?

I have no problem with jailbreak tutorial, but how to install pirated apps on your phone? Complete bullshit move here.

Come on, do the right thing and delete this article…

    FUCK YOU GUYS.

    TAKE THIS SHIT DOWN.

    @newest-warez-site:

STILL, it doesn’t justify all the hate in the comments.
NONE of us still KNOW what happened, miscommunication happens.
Like I said: Innocent until proven guilty. ‘nuf said.

Nice to know which apps you are pirating in this ‘example’.

    http://www.cultofmac.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/Pastebot_2010-04-03_15-full.47.33_PM_28.png

    Pirating Pastebot.

    Take this down.

It’s one thing for CoM to say what they feel about piracy. It’s another thing to post information that FACILITATES and encourages pirate actions. This is beyond bad taste Cult of Mac, this is where I will be on the side of and cheering for Apple Lawyers to slap your ass down. (and I rarely have reason to cheer on the side of Apple lawyers)

I’m writing to Macworld, MacNN, PCWorld, Engadget, and other websites right now to alert them and have them highlight the news that website Cult of Mac gives step-by-step piracy advice. They are gonna have a field day with you.

I love the “my editor told me to” defense..Hey Sayam, just got a text that your editor wants you to inflict yourself with gonorrhea and then nail your testicles to an IPhone. Get right on that for me, mmmmmmmkkkaaay?

still lol-ing at all the ragefags

This is an embarrassment. Just take one look at the few commenters who’ve been defending your posting of this guide:

“retarded MACTARDS! This guide is NOTHING NEW! Want to shoot at the messenger? Go aheand and help yourself.”

“For all the stupid ass devs. and the like: I really don’t care if you all starve to death.”

You’ve chosen an amazing demographic to support. I hope you enjoy them, because they’re the only people who will be here from now on. Goodbye.

    Awesome GUIDE!

Don’t let these greedy lame iOS developers make you down. We need more content like this so we can get stuff that should be free!

Wow! You guys have really crossed an ethical line here. YOUR LOGIC MAKES NO SENSE! If Cult of Mac truly strongly opposes software piracy, then you wouldn’t be publishing a step by step how to article on how to steal money from developers trying to earn a living from the App Store.

I am disgusted that you would post such an article, by doing so you are promoting this sort of behavior and are in no way discouraging it. Though I’m sure some damage has already been done by this, I hope you come to your senses and remove this article from your site.

If I were a developer or publisher advertising on your site, I’d be pulling my advertising right away. You’ve lost one reader!

    Adios Banditos

I am right now contacting LG (obviously they have several ads here on CoM), LG is of course a huge multi-billion dollar company who is currently an advertiser/sponsor for CoM. I am letting them know that Cult of Mac is now endorsing piracy.

Let’s see how that react to that realization that LG (LG being a huge Fortune 500 company) is now sponsoring and advertising on a pirate website. Toodles.

i dont use installous anymore but when i did i would buy the good apps so
i could use the app on all my apple stuff and i support good work,
so dont freak out about piracy its just try before you buy!

If you strongly oppose piracy, then why in the hell did you publish this post? This seems like more of an attempt to garner visits at the expense of app developers. You suck!

This is absolute BS. There are a lot of independent developers who are getting the short end of the stick by pirating, and you aren’t helping by giving people a step-by-step guide on how to pirate.

    Fuck you CoM.

Youch. I develop apps for the iPhone and rely on that income to support my family. I have usage statistics that let me know what percentage of users are pirating my apps. It does hurt.

Anyone good at initiating a DNS attack on Cult of Mac? Now would be a good time.

Sorry CoM, you hit rock bottom on this one. Your site was a regular for me. This post is my last visit. Really disappointed.

After a flood of e-mails requesting us to do so, Cult of Mac decided to publish a step-by-step guide on teaching Muslim terrorists (or anyone with an internet connection) how to create home-made bombs to kill and maim US soldiers. Have fun with our step-by-step guide!!

Until Apple supplies a way to easily get your money back for crap apps, this is the only way to “try before you buy” apps that don’t have a lite version.

Yes, I have installous on my iPhone and yes, I’ve spent over $300 on apps for my iPhone and iPad.

This is one area that the Android market has over the iOS market. If I don’t like an app or it just plain sucks on Android, I return in ASAP.

I am tired of buying apps even with good ratings and they just plain suck.

I’d never keep an app without paying for it.

Seriously not cool guys. I know some of the people who develop these apps, and sometimes it’s the only thing they are living off of. I’m not talking about people who making tons of cash either, but people who are lucky to get by on 35k a year, and you’re stealing from them?

This isn’t “the man” folks, that Microsoft or EA or what have you. So cut it with the “moral high ground” act because you simply don’t have one.

And cut it with the “it’s just a demo” argument. I can hear you saying “well I wasn’t going to buy it anyway, so what’s the harm.” You know what? I’m calling BS. If you’re taking the time to pirate, my guess is you plan on using the app.

Well if you plan on using it, pay for it. Your taking money away from good programmers who have done nothing to ruin your day.

Cult of Mac, this is a complete disgrace. Take this guide down.

Wow, what the hell is wrong with you guys?

Teaching people how to pirate Applications is probably not legal.

Wow, I’m really surprised you published this. Unbelievable disrespectful of iOS app developers. You won’t find us spending any of our Ad budget on this site ever again.

From today onward cultofmac.com is on my block list.
    Sorry, this is ridiculous.

I think it’s awesome. I just downloaded $40,000 in free apps!

I’m generally not one to pile on when the comments are this log but this is simply wrong. I’m disappointed that something like this was posted, and remains on CoM.

    Hey Cult Of Piracy,

I just emailed a couple of your advertisers to express my disgust!

Anyone else who wants to do so too here you go:

    AISO.net:
    abuse@aiso.net

    LG Press Contacts:
    john.taylor@lge.com, clara.chang@lge.com, kim.regillio@lge.com, demetra.kavadeles@lge.com

Shame on the writer of this post.

You can’t seriously say “We don’t believe in doing this, but here is a step-by-step guide anyway”

When used correctly, Installous is a nice way to “try before buying” since Apple does not have the system in place.

However, posting a step-by-step guide for something that is *usually* used for piracy something I could understand by an iPhone website or a jailbreak website, but not a site like Cult of Mac.

Currently Reading through the TOS of your Hosting service to see if something like this would be grounds for reporting CoM for violations

Seriously, who doesn’t already know how to do this? Do all of you really think that removing this page will have any effect on combating piracy?
Oh, by the way, it’s also possible to download music for free. Whoops!

I’m a developer, and I’m a good one. I make great software, and if you want a free trial, I encourage you to get it any way you can. But if you find that you use it frequently, and you can afford it, then I’d really appreciate it if you could buy a copy. I work hard, but I don’t make a lot of money. That said, if you really can’t afford it, please feel free to keep using it. I’d rather have a happy customer that didn’t pay that an ex-customer that did.

WOW!!Never posted here, but damn you screwed up.As you can see from your readers(mostly gone now),you’ve made a booboo.I think the LOGICAL thing to do is remove the how to,issue a statement of apology to YOUR readers, and move on.You’ve bruised up your site tremendously with this, and it’ll take alot to make up for that.I hope no one is pissed off enough to find a”security hole”on here and turn your shit upside down….or maybe by doing that you’ll learn that it’s a double edged sword.

Disclaimer:I do not support website hacking, however, feel free to break in and “fix” a few articles.:)

@Rob Petrie,of course people know about it…we also know that drugs are illegal, but you don’t see the president saying”here’s where the best weed is!”

    unsubscribe!

For all of nancy-boys who state they’re unsusbscribing because of this post, I’d like to state that I AM SUBSCRIBING because of this post.

Instead of writing rage-filled, insulting posts, take a minute to write a letter to the editor (address can be found in “Contacts” above).

The article is written by a sixteen year old; let’s take the time to educate and encourage him over the morality of this post.

Granted, if a person’s morality is such that stealing (i.e. “Cracked Apps”) is okay, then there’s not much to be done here.

Sure, I’ve bought a few apps that have been a waste of my money–often times the reviews on the App Store are unreliable; and blogs that write articles seem to be “paid” to write reviews. I’ve never asked for a refund from any app; but I have requested demo codes from developers when I want to review an article for a blog post. And I always send feedback to developers, who are almost always open to discussing their apps in depth.

The message to developers, I guess, is to consider offering “lite” versions of software–since there seems to be no other way to try apps; particularly for apps that are more than $0.99.. Thank you to the developers who already do this.

I suggest everyone does the same and notifies AISO.net, CoM’s host, that they either want this ‘guide’ removed or CoM shut down.

I officially rename this site: Cult of asshats

    Credibility Lost.

I can’t believe you would print this. I just deleted your RSS feed.

…And you no what really offends me about this write up? He’s using a version of Installous that is super outdated!! He could at least have used the newest version! Oh yeah, and the piracy’s bad too.

bloody c*nts. i didn’t even know this site existed, so if writing this kind of article to bring in more readership was your gameplan, congratulations dick-cheese.

disgusting post. I used to really like this site.

Enjoy today’s spike in traffic… all you loyal readers just deleted you from their bookmarks.

Last time I read an article on this disgusting website, I think developers work really hard to give us great apps for you guys to promote getting pirated apps from the App Store.

This will actually bolster Apple’s position, and now Apple and Jobs can say “I told you so. I told you that all those jailbreakers are no-good-for-nothing pirates and scumbags, and their actions are detrimental to all the devs. I told you this long ago. I told you not to take their side. And now I have clear evidence that jailbreaking really does lead to the lowest common denominator, just look at what CoM is doing.”

I don’t have the time or interest to jailbreak myself. That said, I 100% support the right of people to jailbreak or tinker with products that they own. That said, I 100% think Cult of Mac’s title for this post is lame link bait.

WOW! I thought this was a joke at first. Couldn’t believe the bloggers had sunk so low. The craziness that was artificially created by the blogging community over the iPhone 4 antenna imperfection was already so far over the top I’d begun to think that Giz, Cult, and the rest of you are nothing but morally bankrupt prostitutes who will do or write anything to get page clicks. Now this! With your lies and yellow journalism you are nothing but evil. No more Cult of Mac for me (I already tossed Gizmodo in the trash as well).

With regards to a 16 year old training the world how to STEAL apps… doesn’t matter if he is 10, 16,or 60. He knows right from wrong and the difference between BUYING an app and RIPPING IT OFF. Hopefully law enforcement will raid the kids house and find all the pirated software he’s ripped off and slap a huge fine on him and a few months in detention. Perhaps then he’ll realize this is serious stuff and that many people (unfortunately not enough) get things by earning them and not by ripping other people off. Then again, 51% of the people in this country don’t pay taxes and 2% pay 90% of the taxes so maybe this kid is our future.

    rss has been cancelled.

Where’s the point of this tutorial? stealing developers’ work? oh, ok. So you’re retarded.

Why so angry at Cult Of Mac?
This information is available almost everywhere so why not post good guides here?
Jailbreaking is not only for running pirated software but also as an answer to
Andriod when they (fanboys and media) say that iPhone is “crippled” and “locked”.
There you have it; There ARE two kind of people who buy an iPhone,
those who jailbreak and those who don’t.
The statistics say it has nothing to do with Apples revenue.

    Fucking jailbreakers.

No way in hell is this legal.
The authour should get back to eating the toejam from Richard Stallman’s feet, that fucking freetard.

    NEXT ON CULT OF MAC:
Surely you want to try this iMac before you buy!
    Shoplifting Superguide!

    Moz:

I don’t think anyone is complaining about Jailbreaking. The article on that isn’t getting the response this is. People are complaining because this is a step-by-step guide to stealing material. NOT jailbreaking.

Jailbreaking is, in my opinion, a choice that people should be allowed to make. That’s fine, that’s cool. I choose not to, but that’s me. Stealing applications that developers have made in order to make money to pay for things like food, rent, clothes and hey even other applications, is not cool. It’s no more a reasonable choice than breaking into an Apple Store and stealing a Macbook.

Are you sure you didn’t mean to register CuntOfMac.com as your domain name?

    @Jeffery
I agree in parts whith you, but:
The thing is that Apple are aware of this problem and hasn’t done anything about it in 3 years.
They could change the root password from “alpine” for a starter and then use some app verification process. But no, Apple makes there money anyway, the developers on their hand can’t do anything to improve the anti-piracy protection and THEY are the people loosing money. So IF Apple really cared then they should update the anti-piracy protection.
But again, they won’t becauce piracy is helping Apple selling iPhones. MANY people buys the iPhone just because it’s easy to run pirated apps.

Freelance isn’t a good excuse. A moral person knows when to say no.

Thank you for removing it, but you’re still both guilty of poor decisions here.

    too little too late.
The fact that you think it’s okay or fun to teach people how to rip developers off says a lot about you and the nature of this site.
Goodbye. Enjoy your 15 minutes of fame.

Don’t know what’s been going on behind the scenes at this blog recently, but the quality of writing has been going downhill for some time. This apology is a dollar short and a day late, the article should never have gone up in the first place, and you shouldn’t need your readers to point that out to you.

There are a lot of Apple blogs out there all rehashing the same pieces of news and it’s never been easier to compare and contrast. COM has unfortunately been falling short for a while, time for this reader to call it quits.

No single drop ever thinks they’re responsible for the flood, Leander.

Remove this article or I will remove it for you. This is a disgrace and paints Jailbreakers in a bad light. Jailbreaking is not illegal and never has been, but what you are promoting is and has always been illegal. Not all Jailbreakers are criminals.

Glad to see it’s down, and glad to see that someone stepped up and didn’t let a 16 year old take the fall.

Probably shouldn’t have happened in the first place, but late is better than never.

What you did is no different than publishing someone elses creditcard number together with instructions on how to commit creditcard fraud to get wares online “for free”. Just like you provided instructions on how to use software “for free” that otherwise needed to be paid for and that would have generated income for developers. In either case, one person has all the costs while the other person gets it for free.

Sure, you could also say then, that you “condemn” creditcard fraud, but why not provide the instructions anyway? So everyone “can then make their own moral decision whether to act on that information or not”.

How likely is it that that creditcard wouldn’t be abused and no damage would be done?

And do you really think that “other sites provide these instructions, too” is ANY excuse? It’s a lame and really, really poor excuse AT BEST.

It wasn’t hard to see beforehand that publishing such a guide causes damage to others. So, instead of hiding behind lame non-excuses of “moral decisions of others” and “others do it, too”, please check your OWN morals.

If you perfectly know that what you do will do harm to others and “condemn” it as you said in your article, why do you do it anyway? For the clicks? For new readers? For new subscribers? To get some publicity? Or for more ad revenue? Why not just say that you did it out of greed, then? THAT’d be honest.

We all make mistakes, and nobody can reject an honest excuse. But what you offer here is not an excuse. It’s a justification. And, if anything, it’s lame and disturbing.

^”or I’ll remove it for you”… by doing what? hacking their server or something else ALSO illegal? HA.

luls @ readers posting a link to your (actually legal) book attempting get revenge. Oh wait, that means they’re condoning piracy too. Just because it’s revenge doesn’t make it anymore ‘moral’. Half of these cocks have probably downloaded music anyway.

Let the readers that want to stop reading COM go. If they’re that easily pissed off, you might as well be rid of them anyway.

I’ve generally considered CoM to be closer to an actual news source vs. a collection of posts that have something to do with a subject. As a news source I do not expect to see articles about how to rip people off. Even though that information is available for those who wish to google it, it’s not something that an actual journalist would even consider publishing.

    As for your statement:

“Personally, I’ve always believed publishing information is one thing and acting on that information is another.”

I would imagine that you might feel differently if someone where to publish your address, the contents of your house, the hours that you are not at home, and the easiest way to enter your house. That’s not acting on information, nor is it providing information that could not be acquired through other means. It would be irresponsible to do so.

I do appreciate most of the content provide by CoM but this post, and the flood of recent posts that just tangentially connect with Apple are causing me to consider getting my news elsewhere.

Jailbreaking and piracy: together as one, one and the same!! This article proved it.

In my opinion, jailbreaking and installing apps from cydia is your right. As you said, it’s your device, not apple’s. But installing pirated apps that was sold at the store with a price sticker is a theft. Don’t steal applications, don’t be a thief.

The ‘authior’ is a 16 year old kid. No doubt he ahs never had a job in his life.
    Flipping idiot.

WHERE IS JOHN BROWNLEE !? SOMEONE BURN THAT FAGGOT FIRST

“We support developers and enjoy their many wonderful creations.”

YEAH SURE, we enjoy their creations without paying the .99$ those bastards are asking.

This is how you support developers? Screw you.

Encouraging piracy…..nice job wired and cult of mac. Pathetic.

For what it’s worth, I know that the author does not pirate apps. Not even to try them out. This was just him reporting on the technical procedures to go about it.

Cult of Mac was still wrong to commission and publish it, but just thought you should know.

Shut up you fucks. Whose site is this? Oh wait NOT YOURS! if they want to post that, or a picture of lobotomizing hookers, it is THEIR right, to do so! Stop complaining about this, any halfwitted jackass with an ounce of smarts could look up how to jailbreak and install installous!!! You think this makes them special? If the are going to make a guide would you like it to be halfass? Thats like leaving out peanut butter in a peanut butter and jelly sandwhich! Stop crying about the content they post, and get your own blog, you whiney sacks of waste!!!

Well this is what “open” is really all about. “Open” to steal developers hard work. “Open” to make it easier to steal your information! “Open” to ruin it for everybody except for the hackers and thieves.

Do you really want the front door of your house to be “Open” 24 hours a day?

I’m glad Leander has backed down on this but the fact it went up in the first place, and that he commissioned it, just goes to show what a hack he is.

I am in no way surprised that he’s never had an Apple-sanctioned interview for any of his ‘dirt dishing’ books, especially that highly disappointing read “Inside Steve’s Brain” which in no way managed to achieve anything close to what the title purported.

Hey ho. There’s a reason I don’t come back to this crappy site unless they do something idiotic and get linked to from the better Apple sites.

Leander, Calculate how much pageviews you had on that article and multiply it with 1.99$ (average price of paid apps in the appsstore) and you will get the amount you owe us. It is enough we have to deal with “cracking community” and retards that justify it and now we saw how a high profile mainstream site can make our jobs even harder.

And really I don’t buy your reasoning and justifications for this. It was your idea? I really doubt it. You are not THAT stupid. All the respect I had for you and CoM is gone.

You guys are really too much. Backpedal much? I’ve already unsubscribed. There are plenty of other Mac sites out there.

    You say:
PS: The BitTorrent link to “pirate” copies of my Cult of Mac book posted in the comments is actually a publisher-sanctioned seed. No Starch Press turned it into an e-book and seeded it. So please help yourself, it’s free and legal.
See TorrentFreak: Publisher Posts Mac Books on The Pirate Bay

    From The Pirate Bay:
    lkahney at 2008-03-09 19:48 CET:
NOTE TO SEEDERS: If you can, I’d appreciate it if you’d stop seeding this version of the book. I jumped the gun on this. The book isn’t quite ready to go. There’s no cover and no .nfo file. I’ll be posting a new PDF early next week.

You guys deserve the lawsuit you will be getting from Apple. I am no longer a reader of your crap.

Thank you Leander for removing the post you commissioned on how to pirate App Store Apps under a jailbroken iPhone. I appreciate you reasoning for publishing it in the first place, but if you really wanted a comprehensive Jailbreak Superguide, you could simply state that it’s possible as you pretty much are now.

Sure, it’s easy to get info on pirating software on the Internets, this site doesn’t need to contribute to this.

I’ve never really understood the reason for stealing the hard work of developers all to save a mere $0.99, yet there are plenty of pirated copies of $0.99 software out there. If you don’t want to pay full price for software in the App Store, just wait a few weeks or so, the developer is likely to put the app on sale or even give it away for free for a short time. There are plenty of apps in the store to help notify you of apps that have gone on sale. Plus there is AppShopper.com.

Dude, the reason people are upset about this article is because it’s illegal. It’s called “aiding and abetting the commission of a felony.” You are providing step by step instructions for an illegal act which depending on the details could even be a federal crime.

Just because the guy down the street has an article about an illegal act doesn’t make it legal. This is supposed to be a legit blog/magazine etc., and now you’ve committed a crime and don’t even seem to care about it.

Sorry, but when Leander says that writing this article wasn’t the 16-year-old-guy, but his, it’s even worse…
I guess I’m gonna stick to some other blog, something more ethical. You should’ve remembered about this before allowing this article to be written…
CoM no longer on my bookmarks, nor on my respect…

I knew this would happen. I already copied this artical and saved it, so it doesn’t matter to me if you take this down, I still have it. Ausome!

A half-hearted “disclaimer” followed by a half-hearted “apology.” The fact that you were initially “surprised” at the reaction in the comments speaks volumes — with the exception of a few trolls, the reaction was uniformly negative. Are you really that out of touch?

At any rate, a real apology wouldn’t spend half the time deflecting blame — first by saying other sites post the info, then by saying that you’re just providing info and readers can make the moral judgment for themselves whether to pirate.

I think I’m done with this site too. What a shame.

As someone who earns her living on intellectual property rights (i.e., copyrights), I’m appalled that Cult Of Mac should so clearly be promoting software piracy.

Piracy — in any form, for any reason — is theft and a potential reduction in the income of the copyright holder.

    well,
I’m out as a iphone game developer!
over time you will NOT have more apps or games to steal!

    Leander wrote:

“please don’t attack the author, Sayam. This was my idea, not his. He’s a freelance writer and I commissioned him to write it, so please don’t be mean to him.”

Sayam is a 16 year old child. Many children, when empowered with today’s technology, will do whatever they can do to get the job done, disregarding ethics and laws. When you commission children, like Sayam, to author articles on your website, Leander, you should take care to ensure that whatis sais through you, on your website, is managed responsibly.

You’re not required to remove these articles. But they represent who you are and what you do, Leander. And I believe that removing Sayam’s articles is the responsible thing to do.

Vociferous? Leander: I had bought your book. Ending it all with a link to your book, though free, only shows your real you. Pitiful. We never stop learning how small we are.

Thanks for the half-hearted apology. I still hope that AISO.net will consider ending their hosting of CoM for TOS infringement.

I have reported CoM for this (and also breaking the law) and will encourage others to do the same.

Hey folks, he apologized and took the article down. It’s time to leave enough alone. I, for one, appreciate the gesture and applaud Leander for doing the right thing.

Shame on you, Cult of Mac.

Bit of an odd series of reactions imo. The info has been on the web for quite a while and given the responses here, noone would dare pirate an app/jailbreak a phone.

    So what’s the biggie?

People are disgusting, sticking up for a multi-billion dollar company that doesn’t give a damn about them. Bunch of sheep crying just because someone posted a how-to guide on pirating apps.

Really? People need to get off their soapbox and quit whining already…and SHAME ON YOU for caving to these treehuggers! Put your guide back up, grab on your ballsack, and show that you have a pair for crying out loud. I’m disgusted that you guys cave so easily!

Brian, you fucking retard, pirating applications does not do anything to the multi-billion dollar company. It hurts the application developers, some of whom are one-man shops. Dope.
