Dred Scott is a homeless musician who plays for passersby at Denver’s open-air 16th Street Mall.
A local producer heard him, recorded his music and launched an album on iTunes to help get Scott off the streets.

Released July 12, the album is called Live From 16th Street Mall and it offers six tracks of acoustic covers, including a haunting “Wind Cries Mary,” for $3.99. You can see him in action in the video above, performing “Purple Rain.”
Local news reports that “sales are already brisk and it’s hoped the money will help him get off the streets.”
Scott, who has been playing for over 25 years, told a local blog that he makes anywhere from three dollars to three hundred dollars a day busking on the same stretch of street where he also sleeps.
“To gain Dred an opportunity that he has not had in the past, hopefully get him some exposure where he can do music full time, and not just have to live on the streets,” said Tyler Ward who recorded Scott.
This isn’t the first time iTunes has raised money for a good cause, but it may be the first time Apple’s multimedia store has helped get someone back on their feet.
We’ll keep you posted.

Great attitude! I love it when people help each others… This director has a great heart of helping this homeless and wow this homeless guy is really good!!! Really nice voice!!
brilliant like what i hear, but he should have really gone on the x factor
And thank you, Nicole, for sharing this story with Cult Of Mac’s readers.
He is pollution of our city, not a musician.
diesel, your a pathetic fuck. I bet your wisdom is about as deep as a layer of paint.
The album is great. Just bought it.
I’m just wondering if your whole family is made up of ass-clowns, or is it just you?
This guy is great.. shades of Ted Hawkins for sure.
diesel, you are the pollution you sack of garbage.
I like to think that you are a just a sorry piece of trash troll, instead of a sorry piece of trash human being, but either way, you’re terrible individual for saying that.
I used to live in Denver and would see this guy multiple times a week. 16th St. mall is filled with (mostly crappy) artists. This guy is the only guy I’ve ever actually stopped to listen to, and remarked upon how great the music was. I was so happy to see this story. I’m buying the album, cheers to this guy getting off the street and being noticed.
i didn’t hear it yet, but i bought it all.
Really enjoying the Album, just bought it!
To Dred Scott, hope you start writing some great tunes as you have probably got some life experiences that will bring much needed humility to many of us through your music.
Good music album, I bought it. :D
Nice post Nicole :)
Perhaps they can get Ted Williams to perform an intro for this man. That would make a great collaboration.
Hey diesel you’re the pollution that scars our world. Go away and die like the parasite you are.
diesel-benz u are so full of shit i just had to type it dumb ass!!!
I don’t think anyone can deny the talent this man has. Love his vocals, coupled with solid guitar licks. This is a live EP that other, more famous people charge $10 for…
I usually dislike your articles because of the amount of politics involved but this one was well appreciated. Hope this guy is able to produce a real album soon. I am willing to support real musicians.
A very similar story here from Santa Ana, CA where James Freeman is in the same predicament. Got him set up on bandcamp to sell songs he recorded but the hundred CDs a couple of us paid to get made for him to sell got stolen due to living on the streets. Check him out on youtube here with info linking to his CD:

there are no words to describe my deepest hate for you, lower scum. (aka diesel-benz)
I think this is one of the best articles and “unknown” albums I got in itunes, thanks!
Nice
Just caught this post, but UMPG publishing has banned the video. WTF, it’s freakin’ free marketing!
