Are These The Worst Fake “iPhone 5” Photos Yet?

By

iPhone-5-3d-images.jpg

These photographs, purportedly depicting Apple’s upcoming iPhone 5, clearly reveal the fifth-generation device will boast a dual LED camera flash, two cameras for taking 3D photos, and a new edge-to-edge display.

At least they would if they were genuine. Which we’re almost certain they’re not.

“Leaked” photographs of upcoming Apple devices aren’t uncommon, especially as we get closer a product’s expected launch date. Some photos leave many of us guessing whether they’re genuine or just the work of a Photoshop pro. Others, like these we have today, are quite clearly poor fakes. But we all need a good giggle on a Monday morning.

These photos were first published by Chinese site 175wan.com; a site we hadn’t previously heard of with regards to Apple rumours. They are claimed to be from someone in Shenzhen, China, the home of the Foxconn factory where Apple’s iPhones are assembled, and were reportedly taken “by accident.”

How can I be so certain these images are fake?

Well, firstly, there’s that really poor and tasteless ‘5’ badge emblazoned onto the rear of the device next to the familiar ‘iPhone’ name, which I struggle to believe Apple would ever tattoo onto the back of one of its devices. Also, both the ‘5’ and the ‘e’ don’t quite seem to be properly aligned with the rest of the text. The small text beneath the ‘5’ also looks as though it has been smudged.

That dual LED flash also doesn’t seem quite right. We’ve heard a number of rumors that claim the next iPhone will feature a dual flash, but surely having them both so close together like that defeats the object?

What do you think? Are these photographs quite clearly fakes, or is this what we can expect from the iPhone come September?

    Fake without a doubt.

u can clearly see a bubble at the end, indicating its a sticker stuck on the iphone 4

Yes sir. First picture on the left side. CLEARLY A bubble.

  7. GregsTechBlog says:

Fake. No 3d cameras would be that close, and Apple wouldn’t label the iPhone 5 with a 5, especially not a prototype.

  8. Matt Ralston says:

I suspect that the bubble is trapped under a piece of protective cellophane (that you peel of before use). You can see the edge of the cellophane a few mm in from the edge of the glass.

Also, there’s a pretty big rubber strip in between the glass and the metal surround, which isn’t present on the iPhone 4 so I don’t believe that this is an iPhone 4 with a sticker. Strangely the iPhone 3GS has a similar bit of rubber.I agree that the “5” looks suspicious, although not without precedent – the “me” in “mobileme” is in a funky font.I don’t know what to make of the cameras (or camera and flash). The way they’re arranged with the Apple logo underneath makes it look a bit like a face.I think that this could be a prototype, but I doubt it’s the finished product (mind you, people said the same about the “ugly”, “temporary looking” case of the iPhone 4 when it leaked and that turned out to be the finished product and everybody’s forgotten that they didn’t like it initially).Hmmm….

  9. CharliK says:

Yep. The cameras do seem a tad close and I can’t see Apple putting on two for 3d anyway. At least not yet.

The 5 looks like a totally different font which is funny cause you can find the myriad font on all sorts of free font and torrent sites if you look

    so REAL.

    REALly faked.

  14. Collin Chandler says:

Well I would personally be happy if this was indeed the iPhone5. I’m hoping they keep a similar form factor to the 4. As Matt said, the bubble could be from the protective layer it ships with. But I personally think these pictures are fake.

    * I doubt Apple is going to start naming their devices outside of the print of ‘iPhone’ to start including 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.
    * I believe the rest of the posters in which it’s a sticker labeled on. There’s a bubble on the bottom on the rear device, plus you can see the sticker edging on the right side. It could be a protective film like you would normally use on your iPhone devices. The maker probably didn’t have a squeegee to smooth it out.
    * The 3D cameras are far too close as the rest stated. The HTC Evo 3D model has a 3/4 inch separate spacing http://st2.gsmarena.com/vv/pic… and the LED in the middle.
    * The front of the iPhone does not match the rest of the devices we have seen in concept. Supposedly they are moving the front camera and ear piece to the far top, plus moving the home button to a smaller design, giving extra dimension spacing up to 4 inches.

They wouldn’t be put side-by-side in a portrait orientation either.

  17. Gavin Liquorish says:

The two cameras are two close to each other as commented on by others and they appear not to be level.
Apple are know for the aesthetic design of their products and this fake just looks wrong.

    Heavily photoshopped

You guys just make this stuff up to get page views, right? Advertisers must love CoM’s New Century Journalism.

    BTW, fake.

The usual idea is that you would use NFC to set up the link between the two devices and then do an automatic hand over to a different protocol for doing the actual transfer of data – eg Bluetooth, iphone 5
