TMZ Posts Pics of Frail Steve Jobs [UPDATED]

By

black

UPDATE 3: And the images were fake.

UPDATE 2: Leander here. I go to pick up my kids after school and all hell breaks loose. Two things:

1. TMZ’s pictures are very upsetting but there is clearly news here. Unfortunately, the images make abundantly clear why Jobs just resigned. If these images are real, they graphically demonstrate what we all suspected — that Jobs is very ill, and has resigned because of it.

The question is how we should have handled it. Posting the pictures is a no no. We had this debate when the National Enquirer posted pictures of Jobs earlier this year. We decided they were ghoulish and stayed away. News editors face these decisions all the time when reporting terrorist strikes, famines, disasters or other events that generate upsetting images. Usually they don’t show the most horrific, graphic pictures, but they don’t shy away from reporting the news either.

We work in a highly-competitve, realtime news environment. Decisions about what to post and how is almost always immediate, on-the-fly. It’s impossible to make the right call every time. That’s why news outlets with more resources than we have employ several layers of editors. On this blog, everyone is encouraged to post as quickly as possible — it’s the only way to stay competitive — but that means the editorial process is sometimes post-publication, as it is now.

2. As for the “staff writer” byline, I’m not going to throw the blogger here under the bus, but there is a good reason they post anonymously. In the past, they’ve been the victim of persistent trolls. We decided — with my full blessing — that some of their posts were better posted anonymously to deflect the knee-jerk negative attention they were attracting. That didn’t mean that all posts by this writer should be anonymous, but the system defaults to the settings that were last used, which may be the case here.

Lastly, I regret that we posted the pictures, and I apologize for it. I’m sorry we caused offense. We hold Steve Jobs in the highest regard and affection. We sincerely wish him the best.

UPDATE 3: There are a lot of calls to take this post down. It is very tempting to delete mistakes — just disappear them — but it’s crucial to maintain the integrity of the editorial archive. If we disappear stuff without explanation or notice, how can anyone trust what we write? In fact, we try to be rigorous about making changes to posts after they’ve been published, using strikethroughs to correct mistakes and editorial notes (‘updated’) to add new material. When we make mistakes, we need to correct them, not delete them.

UPDATE: Editor’s note: We have pulled the TMZ photo. We had posted it because we felt it had clear news value, but we understand they are upsetting pictures. Apologies if we offended anyone.

TMZ has a pair of paparazzo pics posted today showing a very gaunt, frail Steve Jobs being helped — or almost held up — in what looks like a parking lot. They are incredibly hard to look at.

We’re holding out hope that they are fakes.

The pictures are here. Warning, they are very upsetting.

    Bruja = Sorceress

There is no Steve Jobs story on PacificCoastNews

  2. Pbn says:

Are you people out of your minds?

  3. Mark Fernandes says:

You could have always used taste and judgement or just common decency and NOT published them.

    Shame on you

  4. matthewmspaceyoutube says:

Please let these be super fake! There’s no way he could get that bad since WWDC!!!! Long live Steve Jobs!

  5. tjames_ says:

The paparazzi need to leave Steve alone. It’s a tough time for him without lenses stuck in his face wherever he goes.

  6. Grandknight says:

They look like fakes to me. I mean what is suppose to be wearing, a skirt? Photoshopped.

  7. MacChickGenius says:

By going on to TMZ’s website, the photos do not look real at all.

  8. Mary Jo Thyes Moesch says:

I am going to say fake. Even if he was too frail to wear “regular” clothes…would he really be wearing a dress? Not too sure on that one…sweats, yea…but a dress??

  9. railstop13 says:

Didn’t see it either. Why would he ask to remain as the Director of the board if it was that bad.

  10. Kgknfknsksvlnsvlvn says:

Stop, just stop. Cult of Mac is becoming a tabloid with this yellow journalism. You guys should be ashamed of yourselves.

  11. Angel says:

Shame on your cult of mac…. MacDailyNews.com said it best.  You guys have totally crossed the line.

“Regarding photos of Steve Jobs: MacDailyNews is not going to be posting them, nor are we posting links to them, so please stop sending them.We don’t need hits that badly. We feel sorry for outfits that think they do.Such images are not “news,” they are tasteless, classless invasions of privacy. We know this will be ignored by the types of outlets that run such photos, but we’ll say it anyway: Steve Jobs is no longer Apple’s CEO. Leave the man alone.”

  12. CF says:

Taste and judgement is something that has been sorely lacking on this site of late. Reposting this has crossed the line as far as I am concerned.
Also Connor is correct there is no Steve Jobs story on PacificCoastNews.com.
Something you would think anyone who even pretends to be a journalist could have checked for themselves.
Guess the people who post ‘articles’ on this site aren’t even pretending anymore than.
    Shameful.

  14. Sigh says:

An agressive form of cancer could absolutely cause him to deteriorate that quickly.  Besides, we’re so used to seeing him in jeans and a turtle neck….we’ve never seen his bare legs to know how thin they actually are.

  15. Mugpet says:

Cult of Mac: WTF is Wrong with you guys?

  16. Sigh says:

In order to maintain a stable stock price.

  17. Gereon says:

Isn’t it strange how his hair is all crisp and sharp and the beard is just a big smear of artifacts?
TMZ is such a reliable source, I get all my information from them!

  18. Sigh says:

A hospital gown, probably of his own design so he is more comfortable.  Regular hospital gowns aren’t very comfortable.

  19. coffeecoffee says:

Well done, Cult of Mac. You’ve succesfully made me unsubscribe from your blog in Google Reader. I appreciate that ‘Staff Writer’ is synonym for intern, but hopefully you’ll learn some journalistic class.

I suggest others do the same, and leave this site in the dust where it belongs.

UPDATE: Leander posts a sensationalising retort like this: “…that Jobs is very near death; maybe a matter of days.”

Leander, you truly are a scumbag.

  20. HPH says:

Why would you post that garbage. You really should be ashamed of yourselves. Leander, I thought you were bigger than that!

  21. HPH says:

Why would you post that garbage. You really should be ashamed of yourselves. Leander, I thought you were bigger than that!

  22. Gperschbacher says:

And Cult of Mac has sunk to a new low. Posting stuff off of TMZ as news and then being so cowardly to post it as Staff Writer? Sorry, but I’ll get my Apple news elsewhere.

  23. MacGoo says:

Apple related? Sure. Of interest? Maybe. In poor taste? Most definitely. Perhaps some restraint was in order when considering posting this.

  24. Romanseight3839 says:

“Staff Writer”? Whoever posted this should rightly be ashamed! No wonder they didn’t put their name to this article. SHAME!

  25. CF says:

    Signed and agreed.
Been coming here for ages because it used to be a good place to get all my apple news in one place.
But to be honest the last little while its been getting so much worse and this is the last straw.
Will also be getting my news elsewhere.

  26. Alex says:

Unsubscribe Cult of Mac. Good bye.

  27. CF says:

Taste and judgement is something that has been sorely lacking on this site lately.
Also Connor is correct. There is NO Steve Jobs story on PacificCoastNews.
Something that took all of 5 seconds to confirm. You would think anyone even pretending to be a journalist would have been able to check that before posting.
Guess the bloggers who run this site aren’t even pretending anymore.
    For shame indeed.

  28. Heathcottage says:

Should be ashamed of yourselves for publishing this, real or not. Absolute disgrace.

  29. Disgracefull Posting says:

Shame on you all, Cult of Mac.
    I won’t be back.

  30. Bob says:

I fell soooo bad for him and i thing it is none of are business but it is TMZ you should be made at.

  31. Philhook says:

Im with MacGoo on this one.

Why post a pic of a guy who is clearly suffering…an apology to his family and friends and a donation to a charity might be in order.

  32. Andydudeman says:

    Shameless.

Do you people at cultofmac.com have any common sense?

  33. Hal says:

Amen — this is the last Cult of Mac story I’m ever going to check out. Ima gonna unfollow your pathetic selves everywhere (RSS etc.) and ignore you forever. Beyond pathetic.

  34. tom says:

real or not, you just lost your credibility…. shame on you cult of mac

  35. Jack says:

Fake. CoM screwed the pooch by publishing this, fake or not. And anyway, Steve would never wear a full-length gown like that.

  36. mjselvig says:

They always post pictures that make them look badder than they are.

    You shouldn’t be reposting this.

  37. Carlos says:

COM, what is wrong with you? This is shameful on so many levels! I mean, come on guys!

  38. Mas Snave says:

Let’s hope it is real, I’m getting tired of hearing about this guy. He already bought himself a transplanted organ once, it’s about time he met his maker.

  39. Jordan Hoffmann says:

Wow. Seriously? Cult of Mac, if you really respected the guy, you wouldn’t have posted this. Well, you have just lost the respect of a loyal reader.

  40. PAUL MINTSOULIS says:

    Why post these here?

    WTF is wrong with you?

Remove this ASAP you have lost a lot of credibility

I expect this from TMZ or Gawker

  41. Ticiano Diniz says:

    Unsubscribe Cult of Mac. Bye!

  42. PhilRead says:

Hey Nicole – suppose you could have opened the image with Photoshop first? Do you really think cloth naturally drapes within a single pixel? Does it look like the wrist has been artificially elongated? Does it look like COM is scraping the bottom of the effing barrel? Idiot….

  43. Arimathéia says:

Unsubscribe Cult of Mac. Bye! (356)

  44. rodiak says:

This site has never been on my list of good Apple reporting, but this post is a new low even for you people… Bunch of idiots…

  45. John Burnett says:

It is about Apple, it is newsworthy. Bucking the trend I thank you for posting this.

  46. MoodyRiviera says:

There is a special place in hell for people who…

  47. fidelisimo says:

These pictures are clearly fake. The extreme halo pixelization around his head is crazy. I mean come on. TMZ we can understand as they have no journalistic integrity, but shame on you Cult of Mac! And I agree with most of the posters,  fake or real,  publishing pics such as these dishonor and disrespect the contributions and legacy of Steve Jobs. He deserves so much more.

  48. Peter says:

Epic fail for posting this CoM

  49. Mark Fernandes says:

For me its really not a question of whether these images are fake or real. The fact is some shitty gutter website published them – that was their choice I suppose and I don’t really have any higher expectations of them. However, this website could have used just normal human decency and respect and chosen not to republish them here.

I am inclined to think that Cult Of Mac should have shown better judgement. That seems to be reflected in many of the comments here.

  50. matthewmspaceyoutube says:

Well, yes. That’s correct. It’s just really sad and stocking to see him (even if it probably is photoshopped).

  51. Jasonpovall says:

Never visiting this site again. You have sunk to into the gutter COM.

  52. Wtf says:

    WTF…where’s the respect for people…?

  53. Heathcottage says:

Please share with us why you think this is newsworthy?

  54. Jordan Hoffmann says:

…Right, so you delete the twitter post about this article? That doesn’t fix anything…

  55. Glenn Burns says:

You all need to pull this article down.

  56. ernie says:

So until we get to the bottom of this, here they are. You guys suck.

  57. Paul Lloyd Johnson says:

You are so right, this is a typical Nicole post.

  58. minimalist1969 says:

Wow, republishing from TMZ.  This is really scraping the bottom of the barrel  I’ve been looking for a reason to scale down my RSS feeds.   Now I have one.

  59. iphoneincanada says:

This was an unnecessary post guys. We all know Steve isn’t doing well, but let’s try to give him some privacy, regardless if these photos are legit or not.

  60. Chris Malone says:

    Deleted by poster.

  61. MichaelTheGeek says:

    Sad.

  62. visaz says:

are you some kinda whole in a ass
or you were born by someone else then your father.
get the fuck of this pic.

Guys  boycot this shitty cult of mac.

I am done so you too.
who the fuck this staff writer.
meet me down on the road you MF.

  63. Craig Ciccone says:

you have exercised severely poor judgment in posting this as “news”.

  64. CF says:

‘We had posted it because we felt it had clear news value’
Yeah I think thats the problem right there.
The fact that you thought this had NEWS value is a shocking thing to admit.
And ‘Apologies if we offended anyone’… you seemed to have offended pretty much EVERYONE.
Which is just a sign that your readership has a lot more class than your writers.

  65. Elassol says:

low punch honestly…. no value in the new, everyone knows he has health issues…. why put the picture… :)

  66. MNYC says:

Of course they’re f**king real. Do you think those were Photoshopped? Steve Jobs unfortunately doesn’t have much longer to live it looks like but he sure did well.

Better to leave the Earth with 60 and having done amazing things than fading out with 100 and have done nothing at all.

  67. MNYC says:

You’re an idiot. I guess ignorance is bliss. You probably also ignore the hunger in Africa.

  68. Foo says:

What the fuck is wrong with you idiots?

  69. jonnyevans_cw says:

oh ffs, this is like if Fox news ran the Mac press. These days, everyone’s chasing the traffic and selling out on principle. It’s tacky. Also — and this is the offensive bit: why would a man with the style to wear the best quality clothes everywhere else wear those nasty grey socks? And even if these pictures weren’t fake, and even if we all didn’t already know steve’s not well, then should we really have seen those socks? That’s beyond the pale!

  70. Qwerty says:

Bye, Cult of Mac!. Last time you see me here. Assholes.

  71. Ferrisimo says:

    Also Unsubscribed

  72. GH says:

first off, this is what I would expect from TUAW…

anyways, The author is really, really shady. Now it’s published by “staff writer”

    this is so wrong.

  73. mahimahimahi says:

They are upsetting pictures, but this is news nonetheless.

“The truth is rarely pure and never simple” -Oscar Wilde

  74. Anonymmous says:

I hope you can bounce back after this faux pas.

  75. UndefinedAJ says:

What the hell is the big deal? They are not making fun of Steve. It is sad to see him like that but it’s not like they’re showing you a dead corpse. You people need to grow up.

  76. frag frag says:

Out of the top mac related blogs i was so sure that cult of the mac would be the first and only to publish this.. Was so right..

as always: cult of the mac is the joke of mac rumors

  77. QandnotU says:

Fakes? This is how you justify posting an article from TMZ…fucking TMZ?

  78. N Salminen says:

What the f*** is wrong with you guys, unsubscribed

  79. GH says:

    How is photoshopped images news?

  80. John Stansik says:

    FUCK YOU ASSHOLES.

  81. Jay Floyd says:

Okay.  Did COM change something about this post before I got here (just now)?  The photo I’m seeing above seems authentic and I don’t understand why people are going so violently nuts about it.

  82. Joe C says:

It is absolutely disgusting you even considered publishing these photos, much less actually did and yanked them down. I’m through with this site and it comes off my RSS feed right now.

  83. Soho22 says:

No, I like to look at starving children all day, because it helps a lot! NEWS FLASH: Here are some more pictures of children dying of AIDS! And look here, a probably fake image of a world famous inventor, looking very sick! Are you informed yet? No? How about the diary of that guy MNYC, because we really need to publish everything about his private life, because we are a news site after all.

  84. Ohai says:

Cunt of Mac couldn’t pour piss out of a boot if there were a hole in the toe and instructions on the heel.

  85. prof_peabody says:

What a bunch of babies.  News is news.  Are we all in favour of censoring the news now?

For what it’s worth they look like fakes to me and TMZ is the same folks who posted a short video of Steve “at death’s door” only to have him show up robust and smiling at an Apple event a week later.  But Jeepers, grow up people.  It’s just a picture.  Fake or Real, it’s a picture.

If someone got a photo of Queeen Elizabeth on the toilet it would still be worth publishing.

Also you are all hypocrites because even if they don’t post it here, you will all go over to eBaum’s world or something and take a peek at it anyway.

  86. Jason says:

    Get control of yourself.

  87. prof_peabody says:

I think they are supposed to be culotte’s, but yeah.  Why would he wear black turtleneck’s and jeans every day for 30 years and then show up like this in the parking lot on his resignation day?  Makes no sense.

  88. Jason says:

You sound like a socialist lib.  Typical.

  89. prof_peabody says:

I don’t get why everyone is talking bout decency and respect.  How is it un-respectful or indecent to publish a picture of someone standing in a parking lot?  If it’s a picture of him it’s just a picture of him, so what?  We should only publish pictures of people that they approve of and like?  No one ever asked me if it was okay to publish my picture.  It’s a picture.  It’s either a real picture of Steve Jobs or it’s a fake, either way it’s newsworthy.

  90. Az says:

The saddest part in all this is the callous lack of compassion every one in the media showed in response to SJ resignation news. The only talk on CNBC has been about the stock price or SJ’s worth etc. In the midst of this story is great innovator dying at the peek of his success.
Steve, we thank you for all you gave us and wish you the best. I also pray that the pics are fake.

  91. Ali says:

I think that anyone who has had a friend or loved one suffer with cancer (and sadly, who hasn’t) feels a little “raw” when a picture like this is posted. Real or fake…it just looks too familiar; and nobody wants to be reminded of that image.

  92. OverLordDZ says:

Can everyone get a grip here. I haven’t seen this much piling on in a long time. This is an Apple blog, and pic of the Apple Chairman of the Board looking like he’s about to die at any point is news, sorry if you don’t agree. I was ready to pat CoM on the back and thank them for having a pair – and then they wussed out and pulled the pics. #OhWell

  93. Jay Floyd says:

You seem like an irregular bather, judging from this comment.

  94. Robert Norris Hills says:

News is news. But someone seems to have pissed off the cultists by posting this.

WE ONLY WANT TO HEAR NEWS THAT’S TWISTED IN A WAY THAT MAKES APPLE LOOK GOOD FFS.

Wake up people. There’s nothing wrong with posting this.

  95. PAUL MINTSOULIS says:

    Hey f@ckface

I guess pics of car accident victims is news too but we don’t post them on tv or the net.

Show some decency and respect for another persons suffering.

The man is sick we get it, there is nothing newsworthy of those pics.

Shame on you Leander…very poor judgement.

  96. PAUL MINTSOULIS says:

  98. Bob says:

You guys did the right thing by pulling the photo. Thank you, you continue to visit your site often.

  99. Michael says:

It’s not about whether or not this is news. It’s about respect for one of the most amazing CEOs in history. If you were ill and dying (not that Steve necessarily is, but we don’t know), would you want pictures of you, real or fake, on the internet? Those images are engrained into my mind, and if Steve were to die tonight, they would never leave me. He has done so much to revolutionize so many aspects of our everyday lives, and you’re okay with seeing these miserable, ignominious images being posted? I have never seen such disrespect for someone who has had such a tremendous impact on the world.

  100. JOHAN says:

THIS EDITOR IS SUCH AN IDIOT. THAT PHOTO IS FAKE. TAKE A REAL GOOD TO THE BOTTOM LEFT OF THAT FAKE DRESS AND THE LEGS. TO STRAIGHT TO BE THE REAL THING.

  101. Chris Malone says:

    @Leander

Thank you. I know news is news, but you should include a warning next time and not have the picture on the front page. Have it hidden and you need to press a button to show it on the article or a link.

That is why on most news stations they will tell you when they are about to show something upsetting because if they don’t people will complain like they were doing in this article if they didn’t have some sort of warning.

    -Chris

  102. Apps66 says:

One mistake by COM does not make them a horrible site.  The fact that Leander was quick to respond and apologize shows his sincerity.  I’m sure all of you haters never made a mistake in your life.  I for one am willing to give someone a break when their overall body of work has been decent and honest in nature.

  103. Allan says:

To Prof Peabody and CoM: News is news, I agree. But did this one belong here on CoM? TMZ maybe, but not here. Steve’s photo with the gown was clearly faked giving CoM more reason NOT to post the photo here. Lastly, I don’t consider being sentimental and showing respect for Mr. Jobs, like most people have echoed here, as acting like a baby.

  104. Blake Beavers says:

Of course its fake it’s fucking TMZ

  105. Peter says:

You guys did the right thing pulling the photo – and I appreciate the editorial feedback. I suspect you guys have learned a valuable lesson here. COM is one of the sites I regularly visit because I don’t expect crap like this – if I did I would regularly visit TMZ and other such sites. I hope you guys get back on track and manage to win over the regulars you’ve lost because it’s a good site and I don’t want to see it lose readers over one bad judgement call.

  106. AidanS says:

It’s wrong because he’s a human being. When a human being is in pain, you don’t parade him or her around for the world to gawk at. Show a little respect for human life.

  107. Robert Norris Hills says:

Mate if you took what you just said seriously and were in a position of power 95% of news events would be taken off the screen.

    Bloody hypocrites.

  108. Michael Snape says:

I don’t believe at all this is real? Like come on whats with all the over reacting. Whatever people who leave have that right. Whatever. Your loss and good, fun news. If they are real, hope he gets better. But he did not look that bad at WWDC. So I say fake.

  109. Daibidh says:

They print these photos because we want to see them… Even I was morbidly curious.  That said, beyond the messy hair and frail frame, he doesn’t look THAT bad… you pansies!  The most shocking is the outfit.  Is that even real?  I’m suspicious.  Look at the lower hem line.  Besides, he seemed more the pajama bottoms type to me. The black gown is a bit too Michael Jackson, isn’t it?

  110. AppleZein.net says:

No, it was discovered that is a face of AppleZein.net http://www.applezein.net/wordp

  111. AppleZein.net says:

No, it was discovered that is a face of AppleZein.net

  112. The_BORG says:

GOD SAVE STEVE JOBS! He’s changed the world and changed my computing life. I wish he could live forever.

  113. frag frag says:

It’s the same thing you did with the article stating that Apple is dropping the mouse.. You had no solid/serious information though you turned it into a proper news article causing so much fuss all over the internet, only later to comment..”thank god that was not true”…
Yes report the existence of this photo but with a grain of salt. You are operating in a very competitive field, that doesn’t mean that us readers should be constantly fed with sh**. Something that cult of mac excels at.

  114. Biotechnology2020 says:

Fuck man, I hope he gets threw it…I don’t understand why he wasnt getting regular check ups…fuck man

This photo is FAKE, get your shit together COM!!!

  120. MrGPhantomeWHAT says:

I don’t think anyone is in favor of censoring anything, especially the news. However some tact goes a long way. Sensational work isn’t needed, and it isn’t news. I would consider this piece and the TMZ piece to be sensational.

We really don’t need to see candid images of Steve Jobs, and I’m sure Steve Jobs would have liked to keep his physical well being private. We all know that he’s a prolific individual, but the man still has things he would like to keep private and people should respect that.

  121. Nicole Marie Rincon says:

    This photo looks incredibly fake/doctored.

  122. Phil says:

    CofM,
You’ve undoubtedly made a lot of money of off Steve’s amazing contributions. Are you planning to profit from his misery? If you truly respect the man remove your ads from any news coverage of his Heath.

  123. Daibidh says:

The outfit aside, I’ve looked worse after falling asleep in the car.  LoL

  124. Eve says:

It’s called the First Amendment and you had every right to post it. For those who don’t think they can/ should post something like this, go grab a pacifier and blankie. I hate that the genius Steve Jobs is looking frail. Fuck, he’s in his 50s and it’s not fair. But take off the rose-colored glasses and be real. I want him to live and for his family not to lose him. Just lay off the media. They are doing their job in reporting this topic.

  125. MNYC says:

Yeah just like the last one was?

    Face it finally.

Mr. Jobs doesn’t have much longer to live. He was amazing and had accomplished amazing things in his lifetime.

  126. HPH says:

Do you guys really think that photo is real… “maybe a matter of days” Have you been in contact with his medical team and confirmed such information. I love how you bloggers shoot your mouth off before confirming anything. I think Steve said it best himself at D8. “We need editorial more than ever” Apparently the editor of this site needs an editor.

  127. Peter says:

Hi Eve – you’re right that the first amendment grants the right to post – but that’s not the issue (for me anyway). It’s about whether I want this site, which I like, to exercise the kind of judgement I would expect from COM or from TMZ. I think people are disappointed to see editorial judgement which is not consistent with what they expect.

  128. imajoebob says:

Exclusive of publishing the (questionable) picture, are you saying ignoring a story purporting Jobs as near death is “responsible?”  Or that because you like him so much he should be treated differently than any other public figure?  Is Apple the Soviet Union and Jobs Yuri Andropov? (look it up)

  129. Jdsonice says:

COM should not have posted these pictures even if they were true. Steve Jobs deserves much better from COM. I am ashamed by your actions.

  130. HPH says:

  131. imajoebob says:

Actually, he’s not.  At least not “just” a human being.  He’s the face of the most valuable public company in the world.  He is the human embodiment of the company, the products, and the “Cult of Mac” (no plug intended).  What he did when he was at NeXT? Who cares?  But now, just like everything Warren Buffett or Bill Gates does, when it’s about Jobs, it’s news.  Good, bad, or banal.

  132. Oprah Noodlemantra says:

“Remove this ASAP you have lost a lot of credibility.”

I’m sorry, but who died and made you god of the internet? You’re all a bunch of big crybabies. Let me look through the history of your professional life and judge and inspect everything you’ve ever done. I’m sure you’ve made a great deal of mistakes. 136. AidanS says:

All the more reason to respect him and give him a little privacy.

  137. imajoebob says:

Let’s be clear: it’s TMZ.com.  No connection to Harvey and his generally respectful, if a little silly, people on TV.

  138. Adrian Parker says:

Thank you COF for being the idiot that makes the mistakes for other online blogs to learn from and avoid, that’s why you’re one of the very rare Mac related blogs that saw “News” in a picture of a man apparently near dying in a matter of days.

If you guys are interested in just gaining visits then say that’s your goal but enough with pretending to be an informative blog because honestly i’ve seen 10 year olds with better writing skills than your many yet useless editors that have shared nothing with the rest of the world but stupid articles with no value. Personally as a visitor i’ve tolerated many article flops on this website, a lot of wrong info,  but this one takes immaturity to a whole new level, if the official editor of this blog really wants to make things right with COM readers (that are going less by the second) i suggest you put all the bloggers articles on monitor mode and reject the garbage notes, or else soon enough this place will only be visited by you and your staff.

  139. Theyseeyoutrollin says:

Oh at first when i saw the article i thought that the empty black picture with what looked like small white specks in it was supposed to be Steve; hinting at the fact that he was dead… what a, ermm, relief?

Don’t know if we should believe these.

  140. Theyseeyoutrollin says:

    It’s called reporting. shut up.

  141. Matthew Rothenberg says:

If you feel its so wrong to post this, then stop replying and giving it more attention. Your posting and arguing on this post just makes you look like a hypocrite. Robert Norris Hills was right: you’re a hypocrite.

  146. imajoebob says:

Yeah.  You unsubscribed.  That’s why you’re too gutless to use your actual ID. Otherwise you couldn’t add your 2 cents to the next compelling iPhone 5 release rumour.

  147. CharliK says:

TMZ is a known gossip site that is not above ‘shopping photos and flat out lying. The fact that the ‘helper’ is barely touching Steve and is looking right at the question is worth note. Also, the lack of details. “A parking lot”, really? This photographer doesn’t remember exactly where he was. Yeah, right.

This looks more like someone caught Steve somewhere and pulled a ‘hey can I get a photo with you Mr Jobs, my kids love their Macs and they would flip’ stunt.

That CoM would even source something from TMZ is more shameful than that BS of Leander validating that crap about how (never proven to be gay) Tim Cook should be pressured to come out of the closet he might not be in.

  148. CharliK says:

Sourcing an article from a known gossip site like TMZ is not reporting. It’s gossip mongering for hits.

  149. Oprah Noodlemantra says:

Isn’t it funny how these people are responding and calling people they don’t even know scumbags, then bitching about human decency? The comments on this post look like an annual hypocrite convention. All these dorks want to do is get on here, bitch and moan because they have nothing better to do. How about knitting? Mow the lawn? Take out the trash? is 4chan down or something?

  150. AlainFleitas says:

This only shows how dedicated and how hard it must have been to resign to think that it takesnthis much to not be able to run the company is unheard of. What a genius Steve Jobs is and it’s sad that not money technology or knowledge can save you from this crazy illness that kills so many daily monthly and yearly. Godless and my prayers are with him and his fam which I hope is taking care of him.

  151. CharliK says:

The black gown makes me wonder if someone took a photo of his granny and ‘shopped a thinned out photo of Steve on the top.

  152. AidanS says:

You pointed out why he’s important. If you feel that way, which you should, then show him a bit of respect and let his private health issue remain so.

Just because it’s interesting doesn’t mean it has to be news.

  153. CharliK says:

The issue here is the source. TMZ is not a news site. THey have zero ethics when it comes to faking news and faking photos.

If Steve really was that sick he never would have asked and been made Chairman. He’s not that much of a douche, he takes Apple far too seriously. And the Board, who under SEC mandate has to be fully aware of his condition, wouldn’t have voted.

  154. AidanS says:

We’re having a conversation parallel to the post. Commenting on it doesn’t make me a hypocrite. What would make me a hypocrite would be if I became a blogger and posted things like this. I said it’s wrong to exploit a human being’s pain, I did not exploit it by saying so.

  155. Damon Bransom says:

I used to come here for info on Apple products and I’ll even admit a bit of Apple gossip. Not anymore. I think I’m going to stick to appleinsider.com, daringfireball.net also osxdaily.com.

There is no respect in what you have done and I can see now the analogy that people place between Journalists and people who write blogs… No matter how many books any of you have written.

I’m not going to lecture you, there is simply no point. I’m just not going to come back.

  156. CharliK says:

IF Steve Jobs came out and admitted that he was on his last legs that would be news and worth publishing.

Everyone else and it is just hit whoring gossip mongering. Particularly when the source is a known ethics lacking gossip site

  157. "Monolithic" Mac User says:

The next step, Leander is to remove all references to TMZ, the link to TMZ’s page (how many “degrees of separation” in taste to you have if the pictures are only a link away?).

Leave it for shameless, TMZ gawkers with their morbid curiosity to see.

No matter how famous you are, even including Jesus Christ, there still exists a zone of privacy.

The shameful photos of Michael Jackson taken when a vulture jumped up on the rear, CLOSED ambulance running board to take a shot through one of the two, oval, vertical windows is a detestable member of mankind (but in eligible for inclusion in “Civilization”).

Does one not have a right to privacy even inside a closed ambulance?!

The photos of Jobs could only be taken if the vulture had broken the law in being in a position to take them.

Leander, take down the entire article along with all posts including this one, or I have no intention of visiting your site — as I have several times a day for as long as the site has existed — EVER AGAIN, let alone click on a banner.

  158. Matthew Rothenberg says:

It’s presumptuous to assume that Jobs is days from death. It’s also presumptuous to assume that he didn’t know he was being photographed.

Unless you know the man personally or a categorical statement has come from his representatives that his privacy was violated (this may have occurred, since I haven’t been following this story closely), it seems this outrage is based on pure supposition.

There may be an actual discussion of First Amendment rights, public figures and privacy hiding in here somewhere … But right now, it seems like an emotional flashpoint without context.

  159. Alex Ray says:

I kinda thought CoM would be better than MacRumors for a while.  At least MacRumors has a quality filter.  Ever since steve jobs resigned, the quality of this site has been rubbish.  It seems more than anything that CoM wants clicks, and from now on i won’t be giving them mine.

  160. Tinal says:

“They graphically demonstrate what we all suspected — that Jobs is very near death; maybe a matter of days.”
Leander, this comment is in really poor taste. Cancer usually ends in tragedy, but people can struggle with it for years with their condition fluctuating. Sometimes it can go into remission and sometimes people can recover. Since you’re not his doctor and are just stating an uninformed opinion based on how thin he is and on a likely doctored photo, why speculate that he may only have days left? Lame.

  164. Michael Donahue says:

    Leander, et al,

You’ve already milked Steven Paul Jobs through the books of poor taste you’ve written about him.

Are you enjoying all the hits today? Going to share them in your pitch to advertisers?

Leander, this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to reveal your character. You can show that you have it or that you are devoid of it — along with even the lowest degree of simple taste.

And sanctimonious shaming of TMZ, followed by taking the pictures down from your own site, but providing a link to TMZ and the pictures is duplicitous. You’re trying to, but you can’t have it both ways.

TAKE DOWN THE ENTIRE ARTICLE AND ALL POSTS, INCLUDING THIS ONE, AND STOP CONTRIVING TO OSTENSIBLY TAKE “THE HIGH ROAD” YET SERVE AS A PORTAL TO THE TMZ PICTURES.

    Show a modicum of class.

I will await this action, and if you do not expunge the entire piece from your sites and any writings drawing attention to TMZ and the morbid photos, I will remove any bookmarks to your site and never visit it again, as I have been several times a day for as long as the site has been up.

This is an existential moment for you and this site. Let’s all see what you do.

  165. OlgaK says:

“The First Amendment is the last refuge of a scoundrel.”
    — Unknown

Eve, if you consider the law and all that’s permissible under it your highest moral standard, I pity you.

Complying with The First Amendment and doing what most people would consider “the right thing to do” even if the law permits it, are miles apart.

Leander, an indelible stain is just that — indelible. And as the seconds tick by, and the piece on your site persists, the stain is setting in.

Leander, do the right thing. And if I have to tell you what that is, you are, in my personal opinion, more odious a human being that I thought an hour ago.

    Michael Donahue

  169. catbusrider says:

Really disappointed in you guys. You are better than this.

  170. Michael Donahue says:

    Leander,

Let me pay you the compliment of being frank: there is precious little difference between posting the personal, private photos of a dying man who has been a private person long before, and I am confident wishes to preserve that same privacy especially when his appearance is so morbid, and serving as a portal to TMZ and the photos via a link to them on your page.

Your many, sanctimonious attempts at damage control, and justifying your actions vis a vis your site and the piece, can go on, and on and on.

And please don’t use the “tough, deliberated, ‘journalistic’ decision” you agonized over as yet another alibi. It will fall as flat as all your previous attempts at justification — and all further attempts.

Words cannot ameliorate your mistake. The only option available to someone with a shred of decency and humanity is what I have already called for, but to no effect: TAKE DOWN THE PIECE ON YOUR SITE, ALL POSTS INCLUDING THIS ONE AND ANY REFERENCE TO TMZ AND THE PHOTOS.

As if in a “tag-team” arrangement, you and TMZ are likely to touch off a precipitous decline in the publicly traded shares of Apple, Inc.

I may make an inquiry to the Securities and Exchange Commission as to whether you have positions in AAPL and whether they are long or short positions.

Posting ads in the name of profiting from this horrible news not only makes you a jerk, but it takes away from the ethical standards that any human has towards another. Yes this is a form of press, but it’s CultOfMac. I am a proud machead and I thought that this website was runed by other Mac fan boys but by posting ads next to an idle who has brought so much to this world then I’m sorry but this is just sad. The title should just read “Steve is dying!! (brought to you by coca cola fresh all the time)” CofM make money off of apple, now their making money off of a dying man.

  190. Smtaz1279 says:

    Not our leader…  :/

  191. imajoebob says:

Wow, that’s screwed up logic.  It’s BECAUSE he’s important that 1) things he does is news and 2) his expectation of and right to “privacy” is diminished.

If you have your entire life savings invested in Apple, don’t you think you have a right, as an owner of the company, to know the health of the company’s Chairman and most valuable asset?  Apple has a legal (fiduciary) responsibility to keep stockholders aware of Jobs’ general health. (Which actually makes this picture even less likely to be real).

  192. AidanS says:

You seem to be confusing how things are with how they should be. When I said it was wrong to post a picture like this, I obviously wasn’t chaining the fact that it was posted, but I was saying that it should not be this way. This isn’t a discussion about how things are, it’s a discussion about how they should be. People should show others more respect.

Jeez.  If you’re going to trash someone for their journalistic integrity DON’T MAKE SHIT UP!!!!

“PATRIOTISM is the last refuge of a scoundrel” is a Samuel Johnson quote (1775)
Considering he was referring to false patriotism, it makes your comment(s) even more ironic.

  194. imajoebob says:

I’m sorry, I still don’t understand your point.  You’ve only said the same thing 6 or 7 times.  Maybe you’ll be nice enough to post virtually identical comments 8 or 9 more times, in case anyone wasn’t privileged enough to read your moving proZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  195. imajoebob says:

Try reloading.  I get similar problems on a Mac, but then it goes away when the page finishes loading.  If it sticks, I reload and it appears correctly.

  196. imajoebob says:

Not to be a kiss-ass, but I’m impressed that Leander left this post up.  The easy solution would be just delete the entire post, including comments.  Instead, he got rid of the picture, explained what he did and why, and now he’s taking his lumps.  Most other sites just “disappear” this kind of problem and make believe it never happened.  He’s letting his readers vent their disapproval with very little restraint.  He’s getting trashed here, but he’s standing up and taking it.

  197. L. says:

“Matter of days” is really a judgment that should be left to medical professionals. If it were really “days” would he be going out for a stroll?  If it is days, weeks, or months, let the man have some peace and quiet. The morbid curiosity is really repugnant. All anyone needs to concern themselves with is thanking Steve for doing his part for changing the world as best he could. That’s what matters.

  198. Richard says:

1st time commenting on any article here and last time visiting, you’re de-bookmarked. I used to rate this site but I’ve seen your true colours now.

You must not pay attention to current events of the last, oh, three decades in which the saying, “The First Amendment is the last refuge of scoundrels” has been in wide currency.

Like so many sayings, it a derivative of the Samuel Johnson quote.

Shakespeare never wrote the line, “Don’t shoot the messenger.” The saying came from a very oblique — I’m sorry, vague — statement by a messenger who asserted that he should not be blamed for delivering bad news in Shakespeare’s “Henry IV” about 500 years ago.

Shakespeare also never wrote, “Methinks thou doth protest too much,” although this variation of the original is in wide currency today — and, incidentally, makes me think of you.

    Oh, so crabby.

Only cowardly geeks would say something like that. I cringed when I read that. Its just so typical of the over reaction to things that you find in geek culture.

  216. tudupka says:

article by “By Staff Writer” or should it say “By TMZ troll”, this is probably my last visit to this site.

You wont’t find such articles on sites like macrumors – you should ask yourself why!!

    Cult Of What ???
Last time I visit this website.

  222. Heathcottage says:

These are not ‘knee-jerk negative reactions’. It’s 12 hours later and I still feel as angry and let down by COM as I did when I first saw the post. Your attempt to justify the post is further evidence that you have lost touch with your readers.

  223. rogerdodger says:

    Shame on you CoM!!!

    You are disgusting.

  224. rogerdodger says:

everybody unsuscribing CoM from twitter and feeds. DO IT and do it NOW.

  225. FormerCOMreader says:

The writer was JOHN BROWNLEE, only John would post such a disgusting topic, no god damn taste. This is the same gay that said “you don’t have to shamefully have 2 male connectors touch”. JOHN BROWNLEE, admit it was you and resign yourself from Cult of Mac. You are a disgusting human being, and you have lost all credibility in all of your readers. SHAME SHAME SHAME. you DISGUST me, JOHN BROWNLEE.

  226. goodbyecom says:

*guy…OH! I see what you did there!

  227. Josh Ward says:

    Pack mentality much?

  228. Guest says:

If you click on the post pics it tells you  (in most cases) who posted it (the pic), and therefore who is the likely author – even on the “staff writer” posts

Look forward to seeing your apology to John.

  229. Df says:

You should rename your site Thirty Mac Zone… and you still keeping the reference pic on your text.. Shame on you.

  230. Guest says:

In reference to the above comment by me, I meant the original pic – not the black one above. Anyone who saw the original pic on here would have seen who posted it, and it wasn’t John

  231. Bickity Bam says:

Exactly what I thought when I opened it in Photoshop

  232. FormerCOMreader says:

Did not mean gay, I meant “guy”, damn phone

  233. FormerCOMreader says:

It was John or Nicole. Not doubt in my mind, “but there is a good reason they post anonymously.” The name was NEVER there, I read the article when there was only 2 comments, and it was still “Staff Writer”. Enjoy reading this shit blog, COM is dead to me.

  234. FormerCOMreader says:

*fuck this phone, i typed “no one” instead of Nicole.

  235. Goo says:

You are still scumbags.  A site with integrity would have done something to the moron that posted the pictures.

Enough lip service.  Do something to show that you believe what was done was wrong.

  236. Bob says:

The good news here is that Reddit is now reporting that the photo is a fake and does an analysis to explain why.

  237. pickme2 says:

Don’t let the door hit you on your way out. And proof before you hit ‘Send’.

  238. Paula Eisenberg says:

The photos look fake to me. And why put a link to them, while sanctimoniously apologizing for posting them earlier? Those photos, even if real, are not news. Steve Jobs’s contributions to the world, and his resignation, are news.

  239. Steven Chaffer says:

    LOl

  240. Jdsonice says:

  241. Asad Quraishi says:

Shame on you Cult of Mac for even linking to it. Whether it’s real or fake doesn’t even matter. Are you a tabloid now? You suck.

  242. ILOVE LIVING IN JERSEY says:

They look fake- how can he be that frail if it was reported he worked a full day at Apple the day he resigned. You guys should have really gave this more thought before you re-posted junk from TMZ

  243. SiliconTlaco says:

    Cult of Mac #fail
No mas cultofmac en Twitter ni en Facebook.

  244. FormerCOMreader says:

Proof? http://www.cultofmac.com/this-… Suck it JOHN BROWNLEE

  245. Leibster says:

Most disturbing to me is that a site that should know better couldn’t tell in one glance that this photo is a fake. One would think that the dress might be a clue.

Steve was seen at Apple by many on the day of his resignation to attend the board meeting. Nobody was holding him up.

  246. JOHNBROWNLEEFAILS says:

  250. JOHNBROWNLEEFAILS says:

  251. Nings says:

Make an update 3: The picture is fake, proof is all over Twitter.

And also, stop making anonymious posts. If they want to write for a large tech-blog like this they should be able to take the heat. If they don’t want the heat, tell them to publish on their own blog that is completely anonymous and also, read by noone.

  252. lkahney says:

I added this to the post above, but here it is again in the comments stream:

There are a lot of calls to take this post down. And while it is very tempting to disappear mistakes — just take them down — it’s crucial to maintain the integrity of the editorial archive. If we disappear stuff without explanation or notice, how can anyone trust what we write? In fact, we try to rigorous about making changes to posts after they’ve been published, using strikethroughs to correct mistakes and editorial notes (‘updated’) to add new material. When we make mistakes, we need to correct them, not delete them.

  253. Groufskyd says:

Steve is sick; real or not these photos are not news.
He surely needs his friends and family right now, not the unwanted invasion of his dignity in an incredibly difficult time. Leave the man in peace.

  254. JOHNBROWNLEEFAILS says:

Leander, John Brownlee has failed. Very hard.

  255. JOHNBROWNLEEFAILS says:

And by the way Leander, why did JOHN BROWNLEE link the Black image back to his old black image post from May 2011? Who else would think to do that other than the author of the actual post. He has done damage to this site, and he is a terrible blogger. Period.

  256. Guest says:

No. Not proof at all. Had you clicked on the original image you would have seen a different name.

  257. Harold Kelly says:

i applaud you for the job you’ve done on this.  it is sad and i think we are all dealing with the illness of our most favorite guy in different ways.  i thank you for being honest.  and i mostly thank you for being graceful during this difficult time where rumors and the like seem to take the spotlight.  whether the pics are real or not, they will be one day if not now.  i love you guys.  i am and will always be a fan of cultofmac.  keep up the great work.  i’ll be reading…

  258. Jaime_Rivera says:

Is the integrity of your editorial archive really worth it when the integrity of that same archive is being questioned? The word integrity means so much more than what you are using it for.

Think about it. There are times to post, and times not to post. Your own personal integrity and conscience are the principles that define that. If you can’t be selective of the content that you choose to cover, then there is no real value in all your hard earned effort these past years.

  259. Allan Cook says:

Some things are better left unsaid. It wasn’t hard to figure out why Steve resigned so abruptly. These photos add nothing to the story, and they are simply a lurid invasion of privacy. It’s no surprise that TMZ would publish them, but that doesn’t mean you have to  publish them, too. Have a little respect and leave Steve and his family alone.

  260. Allan Cook says:

I think part of being a responsible journalist — and I worked as one for a long time — is exercising a fair amount of discretion. These photos add nothing to the story. They should not have been published in the first place. While I enjoy reading and participating in COM a great deal, the decision to publish these unnecessary photos was a poor one and deeply regrettable.

  261. Ta says:

Cult of Mac is now dead to me.  RIP

  262. CharliK says:

I know the reference. And my comments have nothing to do with my feelings about Jobs. But rather the issue of calling something ‘news’ when it comes from a source of complete lack of integrity like TMZ. Their gig is faked news to get hits. With faked photos to back it up

CoM used to have a back bone and avoided such things. Apparently the quest for the almighty money making hit has broken that and now they are just as spineless as TMZ and the like.

  263. Another unsubscriber says:

Unsubscribed until Brownlee goes. The guy brings this site down more than anyone else.

As Brownlee would say, SHAMELESS. It’s SHAMELESS he still has the privilege of writing for CoM.

  264. HorHay Boombox says:

See nothing wrong with the photo being public. He is adored and admired by millions who follow his every move and really love this man and the release of the photo is keeping hid dedicated following updated in a way. Doubt he himself would care..Maybe a good example telling people “This is what Cancer can do to the Human Body. Not lurid as he is a worldwide loved figure. The D. Lama would allow such. I am a part time cig smoker of many decades and am quitting today because this great man I admire believed in self control and responsibility to the nth degree.  Godspeed Brilliant leader.

  265. herald says:

“They graphically demonstrate what we all suspected — that Jobs is very near death; maybe a matter of days.”They demonstrate that some dumb idiot has terrible photoshop skills. But glad you “know” more …

  267. Chris says:

    Hello Leander,

My name is Chris Sheppard, Founder and Editor of The MacMob.  I just wanted to reach out and introduce myself but also let you know that i think you handled the Steve pictures very well.  I woke up this morning and did some reading and ran across your post “TMZ Posts Pics of Frail Steve Jobs.”  I know it is hard to control what editors post, and it certainly is not always easy to have to clean up after the fact.

I was going to post the pics as soon as i saw them, but like you, thought it was a big no no. I really think you handled this situation well and thought you should know since most of the comments are pretty negative.

At any rate, I have been a long time reader and fan of Cult of Mac.  Thanks for your commitment to bringing quality news and more through the years.

  268. Allan says:

imajoebob, Either you did not understand what I said or you are over thinking this way too much. I said the photo was fake so it should not have been posted here in the first place. If there is a credible story about Jobs’ health, it deserves to be mentioned here. But this was gossip and re-posting the faked photo here was in poor taste. Feel free to go somewhere else about your Soviet Union argument.

  269. Ads4art says:

TMZ published a photo on Friday purporting to show a very ill Steve Jobs, but commenters at the website Reddit point to evidence that the image is a fake. There are signs that the image was pinched to make Jobs look more frail; that parts of the image have been cropped; and that some of the shapes in the image are unnatural. The Daily Beast briefly linked to the image on TMZ but removed it after learning that it was dubious.

For obvious reasons, we didn’t post the picture and will not post the evidence of it being fake ( linked above ). Shame on TMZ and especially shame on everybody in this iCommunity who posted the picture thinking that it had ‘ clear news value ‘ . http://i.imgur.com/WV5Y0.jpg

I posted a comment that “Cult of Mac is dead to me. RIP” and my post was deleted.
So much for ” maintain[ing] the integrity of the editorial archive.”

  272. Dahlijo says:

I was truly shocked when I saw this earlier today. Not shocked by the picture that you claimed was of Steve, as it was clearly a fake, but by the post itself and the fact that it was posted on CoM. I thought this site was meant for the true Apple fans and that this was the place to come for the latest news regarding Apple and their products. Well I was dead wrong. This is the last post I will contribute to this site as you are hereby removed from both my RSS and my bookmarks.
    I’ll let myself out.

    Photoshop can do wonderful things.

  276. MoodyRiviera says:

OK…how about if we all just knock it off now? We’ve all made our comments about how appalled we are, and how disgusted we are…and rightfully so.

And the proprietor of Cult of Mac has seen the error of his ways and has apologized.

We all make mistakes. He made a big one. But he’s sorry, and he’s said he’s sorry.

I forgive Cult of Mac for this error in judgment…and I’m ready to move on to other things. Cult of Mac is my favorite Apple-related web site, has been for awhile, and will continue to be so…they do a great job. So…Cult of Mac…you are forgiven.

How about the rest of you? Forgive and forget.

  277. Goo says:

How about you go screw yourself Moody?

How about instead of forgiving, we keep pushing until the management of this site does something to rectify what this unnamed writer has done?

  278. Seanwilliamson90 says:

Why would Steve ask to be made chairman if this was his state?
    I call BS

  279. Goo says:

You’re pathetic.  Stop using this screw up to promote your two-bit website.  If you were an actual journalist you’d know this whole thing was handled horribly.  Now go back into your unknown dark corner.

  280. J C Stevenson says:

I love the Cult of Mac site, except anything written by John Brownlee.

    His contributions are awful.

The best way Leander could improve the site is get rid of Brownlee.

  281. Foo says:

Fair enough Leander. Why not also let the writer whose bright idea this was stand up and take responsibility for this?

They should stand behind their work let other organizations that may seek to employ them understand the kind of work they can expect.  Do you fear that may permanently damage their career?  That sounds like a fair outcome for what they’ve done to me.

And despite you seemingly taking responsibility for what was done, you haven’t really.  You’ve said anonymous writer did a bad thing and you corrected it by altering the post.  In the future, your reputation isn’t damaged because by all possible accounts, you did the right thing at every step and the writer is protected.  Shameful.

  282. herald says:

    Fully agree.

  283. Chris Malone says:

I feel this was written by Brownlee too.

“As for the “staff writer” byline, I’m not going to throw the blogger here under the bus, but there is a good reason they post anonymously. In the past, they’ve been the victim of persistent trolls”

The only writer on this site that is consistently flamed in the comments is Brownlee and for good reason.

  288. minimalist1969 says:

Using TMZ as a source is about as smart as using the Enquirer or any other trash tabloid as one.   I would hope a serious journalist would be able to spot a manipulated image.   Not only did TCOM miss the telltale signs of manipulation but then you got get all defensive about it claiming the photo was newsworthy because it made Job’s health issues “abundantly clear”.  And now it turns out they were fake and there was nothing newsworthy or abundantly clear about anything and the site has double egg on it’s face.

This is what happens when you post first and ask question later.

I have to admit, even MacRumors who post everything possible when it comes to Apple news, didn’t lower themselves to this story and left it to be posted in their depths of their forums instead. The third update, the whole “fake” thing, is equally disgusting, hoping to fob off some pretty weak arguments that the photos are fake, as if it gets you off the hook somewhat.

“Hey, it’s cool now, they’re fake according to some bloke who hasn’t detailed his credentials as a Photoshop expert, so please resubscribe to us, no harm done”. As if. And for the record, the “proof” of the photos being fake has been equally debunked by numerous members of numerous forums already, some who HAVE stated their Photoshop credentials.

I agree with others, this was probably written by Brownlee, the man who gives Apple fans a bad name with some of his inane ramblings on here that, somehow, get passed off as “journalism”. I’ve written better pieces in my Secondary School years (High School to our American friends) while sitting my Higher English exam, and I’m now 32 years of age.

  308. Tim Pease says:

Actually, he is that tall.  I believe Jobs stands 6’2″ or in that area.  I remember him standing next to Gates at an AllThingsD conference and bent down to shake Gates’ hand.  And Gates is 5’10”.

  309. Asad Quraishi says:

Appreciate the apology but not the excuses. Clean up your act before you lose more of your readership. I’m not one of the readers you’ll need to worry about though. And no it’s not only due to this post but it was the one that broke the proverbial camel’s back. It’s been a slice.

  313. Anonymous says:

If this is indeed fake, you’ve put me through a lot of grief. I’m an emotional guy and the news hit me hard as I see Steve Jobs as a role model. Plus the photo was just extremely disturbing, and whether it was fake or real should not have been shared publicly. I’m not one to advocate harsh retribution, demanding unreasonable things like making the writer’s identity public etc.

You did handle the mistake properly, Leander. Everyone makes mistakes. While I had to share my criticism with CoM because the post was clearly upsetting, I’d also like to apologize on behalf of all the rude and unreasonably stubborn, unforgiving people who’ve written excessively nasty things aimed at you, Leander.

  314. bored says:

It’s not a “famous quote,’ it’s only rarely been used as a conflation of the original quote.  That’s not the same as a misquote or coining a new phrase.  To use it as an actual quote – without any citation, is proof that you made shit up.

  317. imajoebob says:

What? Did you say something? I fell asleep reading your 73rd iteration of the same vapid comment.

So you’ve made a decision to take an action based on misinformation. Since this is an incorrect assumption, please encourage all your friends and acquaintances to immediately unfollow/unfriend you, and remove your email from their address book.  You wouldn’t want them maintaining contact with someone so SHAMELESS, would you?

  319. imajoebob says:

The one thing this thread needs to be complete is a Trammps soundtrack.

  320. "Monolithic" Mac User says:

    “imajoebob”:

You’re right! I do need to repeat myself!

To REPEAT, “I don’t believe 6 or 7 is accurate. Apparently, it was necessary for you to exaggerate to make your case.”

imajoebob: You still wrote, “I fell asleep reading your 73rd iteration of the same vapid comment.”

(It was a multiple choice matter, BTW: B.) you didn’t HAVE to read my post at all! But I guess given your solemn mission to protect and defend Leander and company, you must scan all posts for signs of disagreement. Except Shawn King’s posts or Jonny Evans’ (Gotta stay good with those guys in addition to CoM. Gotta be pusillanimous.)

    Just for you imajoebob:

1.) I don’t believe “73rd” is accurate. Apparently, it was necessary for you to exaggerate to make your case.

2.) I don’t believe “73rd” is accurate. Apparently, it was necessary for you to exaggerate to make your case.

3.) I don’t believe “73rd” is accurate. Apparently, it was necessary for you to exaggerate to make your case.

But I must admit, I am indebted to you: I had a long, thoroughly enjoyable laugh when I added up your 21 posts, or flames (at least as of the last refresh), and YOU flame ME for too many posts! (lol)

in here, all but about two of your posts are flames.

You have shown yourself to be the absolute archetypal hypocrite. You have made thousands of posts in countless forums. Some are absolute TOMES compared to mine. I admire you your free time.

In my opinion, you are the most self-righteous person I think I’ve ever encountered. Congratulations!

You pontificate your opinions (that’s if you even consider them matters of opinion) and when you find that you can’t simply transpose your opinions into someone else’s brain unchallenged, you can’t handle it!

If someone comments differently on an opinion you’ve opined, instead of engaging them in a dignified, high-minded exchange of differing opinions, you flame! You swear, lob ad hominem attacks, and seem to have an utter distain for opinions that don’t line up exactly with yours — oh, I forgot, not unlike Chairman Mao, your thoughts are not opinions, and are not subject to scrutiny or honest disagreement. Man, for a lib you sure exhibit the traits of a dictator.

And since it seems to mean so much to you, I will claim them as my own words: “The First Amendment is the last refuge of a scoundrel.” — Michael Donahue

    There. Happy? (I suspect not.)

I also am grateful to you for the delicious episode of laughter you evoked in me when you deigned to write, “Not to be a kiss-ass,” Ah, ha, ha, ha, ha! AH, HA, HA, HA, HA [breathe], HA, HA, HA, etc.

Now that one takes the cake. I won’t stoop so low as to use your vernacular, so I’ll put it anothervway; all you’ve done in this forum is be an obsequious lackey for Leander and company.

“Not to be a kiss-ass,” far outranks “Not to change the subject,” “Not to interrupt,” and “No offense, but…” You didn’t realize you made a major accomplishment, I’m guessing.

In almost all of your 21 posts (at last count), you’ve flamed nearly everyone who has criticized Leander, his staff, and CoM.

Leander didn’t actually write the piece in question, he is the one ultimately accountable; “The buck stops with him.” In other words, use baseball’s and hockey’s method for dealing with out of control players. Hold the coach responsible. If a pitcher intentionally throws at a batter, the manager gets tossed along with the pitcher. If a hockey player leaves the bench during a fight, the coach gets fined and/or suspended.

Please, PLEASE respond! I’m having too much fun so easily getting under your skin! I want to revel in your flaring temper! It’s been a blast!

    Thank you.

    Leander,

I just caught up on my news feeds today after dealing with Hurricane Irene and saw this post.  I don’t often comment but I have to tell you how disappointed I am that CoM put itself in this position by republishing TMZ trash.  Add to that, an article I just read here about Tim Cook’s sexuality has left me scratching my head.

Seriously dude – I see your ass being interviewed on those CNBC specials about Apple, you’ve made a name for yourself in the Apple community and this is how you conduct business?  Giving people lectures on what is or is not newsworthy is a false argument; the issue is taste.

Is what we’re about to publish in poor taste?  That’s the question you need to ask.  Otherwise you’re no better than TMZ, Nick Denton, or any of the other “news” sites which resort to this kind of scumbaggery.

Curious that both articles I mentioned, the one about pictures of Steve and Tim Cook’s sexuality were posted by ‘Staff Writer’.  Why is this mysterious person afraid to attach their name to what they put out there?

We all know Steve Jobs is sick.  What news value did you add here by publishing this?  Showing how much cancer sucks?  Good job.

I think you need to think long and hard about what business you want to be in.  If you really want to be known as the Gawker of the Apple world then have at it.  I suspect you may attract some readers but lose quite a few more.

I’ve got no problem with the “taste.” Do you skip reporting about wars or terror attacks because it might offend peoples’ sensibilities?  News is never a question of good or bad taste.  It is simply news.

Now, if you’re upset about the lack of investigation before trying to jump ahead of everybody to publish this, I’m with you all the way.

(Danish newspaper, legit website)It says at the end of the article, that rumors on the internet says the picture is fake, but*** the ‘All Over Press’ photo-bureau confirms that it is real. ***So Jobs dead + buried within weeks. Sorry guys but  crApple have JUST screwed your GULIBLE arses over AGAIN!

  329. Karen Ingraham says:

There’s one good reason to see this picture. This is what pancreatic cancer looks like. Jobs has islet cell PC; that’s a rare and slow growing form of PC. Most people with PC get the adenocarcinoma variety that kills you fast – usually within a year, and many times, within months.

Pancreatic cancer has the worst mortality rate of any cancer out there. It also gets very little money relative to the 99 percent death rate within a year of people who get it. So the one good reason to see Jobs’ picture is to see what happens to people with PC sometimes within WEEKS.

Maybe someone will come up with a program to eradicate this cancer, or at the least, a program like the pink ribbons for breast cancer. PC has no good spokesmen. The research is not well funded. There have been no major breakthroughs with this cancer in years.

Lots of famous people die of PC. Maybe if someone like Jobs dies of it, finally, the powers that be will take it seriously and fund research appropriately.
