More than 1.7 million iPhone 4s were sold from Thursday, June 24 through Saturday, June 26, Apple announced Monday. CEO Steve Jobs called the new iPhone “the most successful product launch in Apple’s history.”

Jobs also apologized for the long lines some people encountered while waiting to purchase the device. “We apologize to those customers who were turned away because we did not have enough supply,” he said by statement.

The 1.7 million figure tops earlier analyst expectations of 1.5 million iPhone 4s sold on the first day of sales. However, the Apple announcement appeared to jive with the record 600,000 preorders on the first day they opened.

The iPhone 4 also broke records in terms of early sales of the Apple handset. It took 74 days for the Cupertino, Calif. company to sell the first million original iPhones in 2007. The iPhone 3G, launched in 2008, sold one million units in the first three days.

IPhone 4 sales were also bolstered by Apple’s decision to quickly ship the handset internationally, launching phone in France, Germany, the UK and Japan on the same day it became available in the United States.

With popularity comes reports of shortages. Deutsche Bank told investors Monday that 60 percent of Apple Stores and 100 percent of retail partners were out of iPhone 4s by Friday night.
